Your question is not clear but I'm assuming you either want to 1) Completely erase confidential information from your hard disk or 2) Simply carry out housekeeping and delete useless and or duplicate files etc files etc.

If 1) Simply formatting your hard drive will not erase any files. All that happens is all the filenames are changed by changing one character which prevents them from being viewed and lets the computer know that the space is now free to be overwritten. Any decent data recovery software would still be able to recover information.

There are various pieces of software (freeware and commercial) that will overwrite your hard drive with random data to make recovery of anything a little more difficult but again a decent Data Recovery company could recover some, if not all the data. The only true way to avoid any data being recovered from your hard disk is to remove it from your Computer, dismantle the platters and one at a time crush them with a very heavy hammer. If your information is sensitive enough then the hammer is the only choice.

2) If it is merely housekeeping, you can search for any temporary files using *.tmp and any CHK files using *.chk and it is safe to delete them all. Go into Internet Explorer TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS and click on the GENERAL tab. Under BROWSING HISTORY, click on DELETE and then click on DELETE ALL.

You should also run spyware and adware software and I use 3 pieces of Freeware namely 'Adaware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy and SpywareBlaster'.

After that you should Defragment your drive and then you should have a nicely cleansed hard drive.

If you mean basic maintenance things like get rid of all the temporary internet files, cookies, recycle bin, do a disc clean and then defragment your disk, it's very easy when you know how.

Go to start>programs>accessories>system tools>Disk clean up

Then go to
