if you have talked it out with your spouse and need time away
write it all out everything
who gets what and what will be paid etc...
make sure you both agree on everything
then go to a lawyer for a few dollars you can have it notarized and signed
make copies and send them to the county court they will file it

Go to a mediator and tell them you need to file legal separation papers. They are free and there to help you. If you have the money, get a lawyer, who can expedite the paper filing.

Don't for get to hire a private investigator to gather data on your spouse to help strike a better deal for yourself when you go through the divorce process, in relationship to property & finances.

go to a solicitor/lawyer they will tell you all you need to know and tell you how you go about it. one thing i was advised to do was to draw up a will so that your estranged partner has no claim on your estate/money etc.
