Human metabolism is composed primarily of a complex system of anabolic and catabolic reactions, each with its own metabolites and alternating junctions which allows the continuation of higher mechanical functions in the body. The reactions focus around the key cycles of glycolysis and the TCA cycle which function to convert glucose (sugar) aquired from the diet to ATP (a source of energy for the body).

Riverdrudge's statement made a valid point. I'm just going to elaborate upon it.

There's two types of metabolic reactions: anabolic and catabolic.

Anabolic reactions are involved in polymerisation reactions to produce the molecules a cell needs to survive and replicate: DNA, protein, Carbohydrate and fats. These reactions are crucial in sustaining life in buliding organisms. Because these molecules are so complex and ordered, through, these chemical reactions --to build these molecules-- requires energy. Without a form of energy these molecules simply would'nt get built.

Catabolic reactions break down molecules to produce the energy required for anabolic reactions. An organism can harvest glucose from it's environment. It can not harvest the full set of functioning proteins, DNA, fats and complex carbohydates: it needs to make its own. So it breaks down glucose to release the energy it holds within its chemical bonds. This energy is temporaily stored as ATP, and then ATP is used to drive, other wise unfavorable, anabolic reactions.

So, I guess to answer your question simply, the purpsose of metabolism is to maintain life.

It is the fuel pump for our body. It determines at what rate the calories we ingest get burned. When we need more, it delivers more. When we need less, it does the same.
