well, my father (is Greek) has been married to my mom for almost 20 years , and my mom (is Dutch) has been living in Greece for over 20 years now. When people ask her where she is from (despite her speaking perfectly Greek, you can still hear she is a foreigner) they most probably guess that she's German, but they always look happy when she says she's dutch. I think that it would help if the non-Greek person tried to speak Greek, because i see that it is highly appreciated . My mom doesn't have any Greek friends as well, but with her job she meets/knows a lot of Greek people. I don't know about other countries, but i know that in Greece it is said that they gossip much, but i wouldn't consider that a huge problem. There are always people who are different and more friendly, probably the younger ones and the ones who have been abroad. It must be that since you live on an island (small community) that the people are more conservative and close. But i think that you can show them how nice a person you are and be friends with them.

Don't rush. Take your time to make sure you really love each other and can surpass all obstacles. I don't mean the obstacles of being Turkish+greek, I mean the obstacles any couple may face, which is the reason many people brak up even if they are the sam nationality, religion, etc. Instead of getting married, get engaged for some time, the families will have time to get used to the idea too. If after a year things are still great between you two, if your love is strong, it will last and then your families will also see it nd you'll get married.
One last thing: discuss with the guy now what will happen with children, about names and religions. It's better to solve any disagreements now, than to face the problem once the child has come. Religion and history is important for Greeks and Turks, so make sure you have agreed with your husband in advance.

If you were a swedish, or a german I would say be careful becuase we are talking about a different mentality, and different way of life. The greek man, is the man macho dont forget.
But since you come form a country which ahs the same mentality(and greeks dont refuse it, I am greek too, but the orienytal mentality is everywhere the same)I dont know where the problem is.Maybe they dont want you to go away...my parents would do the same. But not because of religion or anything else..
Maybe the problem is the religion, something that it is not important for me..
But...before you do any step...think of it better. In the beginning it may seem fantastic, but in reality there are problems..I know what I am saying, because I had a friend who did ths same.
Problems for children, problems of families, that even if we wnat to eliminate them...they exist..so, both people have tio be so opened minded and ready to eliminate everything and to continue their way leaving back behind...Are you ready?

just follow you heart and forget about your families.I know from experience. I left my country and married a greek moved to greece 17years ago of course my family were outraged and his family were appauled that a greek had brought home a foreignor. but we survived and are happy. I dont know if the 2 families will ever accept our decision but we dont care we are as happy as the day we met and keep both families at a distance.

They have no right to dictate who you will marry and with whom you will spend the rest of your life with.
Families love unconditionally and should be "there" for all the important decision you make in your life. Instead of criticizing and being negative the only thing they accomplish is putting you further and further away from them.
This is your life and your decision. You should do what your heart and mind tells you is right and marry this man.

The alternatives are the same now as they where when Shakespere had Juliet exclaim:

O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father and refuse thy name;
Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I'll no longer be a Capulet.

One or both of you must be ready to surrender that part of your identity or background which makes you the enemy of the other's kinfolk. A difficult task in any age or at any place.

But as Juliet said:

"So dear I love him that with him,
All deaths I could endure.
Without him, live no life."

And remenber, nations, borders, and even religions may pass away but love endures forever.

Iyi şanslar!

If you love him and if he loves you I cant see any problem .
Ohh families ?
9 muonts + 10 days later they forget everything. I mean a baby can solve that problem very easly.
But baby's name is very important. If girl Melisa ... if boy Ege or someting like that.
1 year later both families begin to understand that , they were wrong.
Good luck to you
