Actually they stem from George Washingtons army. In the cold weather the men got sick with colds. The men would wipe their nose on the sleeve, and Washington thought that was not proper for the uniform. So he instituted buttons on the cuffs to prevent the soldiers from doing that.

The buttons on the cuffs are a throw back to when buttons were added to cuffs of military uniforms so guys wouldn't wipe their noses on their sleeve. The buttons would hurt the nose. The buttons were on the top of the sleeve.

This is true. I am not pulling your leg or arm or any other body part.

For the same reason as some womens jackets have buttons on the sleeve. They just are. It's part of the particular style of the jacket. Aesthetic value!

If i remember right i think it comes from the days when men's jackets like the style you have mentioned, were called "shooting" jackets. The buttons were made to be openned so that the wearer when useing his gun could get more use of his arm ie his sleeve would "ride"up allowing larger arm movement.

some say so it's when he wipes his nose on his sleeve, he knows where to stop before wiping his nose on his hand...but i think that's hogwash....

they're leftover fashion devices from when clothing was so big you had to have a wider cuff to get your hands and arms into the sleeve, then you could button the sleeve closed, similar to why shirt buttons on cuffs exist

At one time these buttons were used to keep one's gloves on.

There was a time when one size fits all gloves were too large for the average man and these buttons were used to help a gent keep his gloves where they should be.
