I don't know what's wrong with my laptop, I removed all my mp3 files to an external hard disk n'after that, the whole system stopped making any kind of sound. Nothing works!! :(
I tried the troubleshooting thingy but it didn't help at all & nothing changed . :|
I was thinking that "maybe" if I format, the missing thingy in the sound driver will be fixed. am I right? & How can I format a pc by myself???

Thnx.

P.s, when I opened the device manager, I found a yellow (!) on my multimedia audio controller, it said it's not sharing any files coz it's not working properly .. is that the reason? & how can I fix it?

Thnx again... 5stars to the right answer.

You've somehow deleted or moved your soundcard driver. That's all. Don't flip out and format your machine, it won't fix the problem and will cause a whole stack more for you.
You're right about the yellow ! in device manager, it's showing your sound card is installed and that your system is capable of producing sound but without the right driver, it doesn't know how.
Start by trying to fix the existing driver - in Device Manager, right-click the multimedia controller (the one with the !) and go to Properties. Somewhere there should be a button to "roll back driver" and a couple of other options. Try these first.
If you still have no sound, find out exactly what sort of sound card you have (use Device Manager again - if this doesn't give you enough information, use the Belarc Advisor on Belarc's website which will give you the full details) and search the net for a free driver for that sound card. Try the manufacturer's website first, then Google "free sound card drivers" or the full name of your driver and you should be able to locate the file you need to make it work again. Install the driver file, and this should fix everything.

NO!

Do NOT 'format pc'!

This should be something from which you could recover.

You need to reload the music application,

Everyone who knows little to nothing about computer systems is always thinking that what the Microsoft people say is true, when it is totally a waste!
Options:
A. Take these steps:
First, run Crapcleaner. It is free on the Web.
Second, defrag the hard drive. use the tools.
Finally, then, grab the WMA off the Restore CDroms, or off the Microsoft website!

B. Restore is a second Option:
Restore the system to a version and image tha you saved just before you 'lost' the mp3 function.

XP has 120 patches, since SP2. A reformat and reload of XP can take at least two hours of labor!

C. Dump Microsoft and all the virus definitions, anti-malware program(s) overhead, and gain true 5.1 plus all MP3 functions, and, frostwire. http://pclinuxos.com LiveCDrom that also can install, later, but, initially just runs in the CD!

The yellow ! is the reason you have not sound. You should not have to format the hard drive to fix that. Formatting the hard drive would completely remove Windows, all your programs and all your data files from your PC. You probably do not want to do that.

Go to the web site of the manufacturer of your PC and look under either Download, Drivers, or Support. Find your model number and you should be able to download the audio driver for you PC. Follow their instructions for install the audio driver and the yellow ! should go away and the sound should return.

You need to reinstall the driver for your sound controller/card.. Go to the manufacturers website of your sound card and download the drivers for it and install them. Just a tip, you don't format your pc you format your hard drive and that will not fix any driver issue you are having, it will delete everything you have on your computer even your Operating System, so might not be a good idea unless you want all your sht gone..

Jusr right click on that Audio Controller under your Device Manager and select update driver. Make sure you are connected to the internet and it should automatically download the driver.

DO NOT FORMAT!

You must've moved a file that the audio interface needs.

Go to the manuf. website, find your computer, download the audio drivers and install. You'll be fine.

Did I mention that you SHOULD NOT FORMAT YOUR DRIVE?

:)

You can reformat it, reinstall your OS and then download and install your audio drivers. Don't do what other posters say.
