Doctors always say that you should try for a baby for at least a year before going to see them for check ups.

Can anyone tell me what the actual process is when you have been trying for a year. For example, I don't have too much faith in my doctor - I feel like I could be dying and they would be reluctant to get an appointment in the diary - so I'm just wondering if after a year, they simply tell you to try for another year (I have heard this before too).

If you have check ups and everything looks fine...what is the usual wait for IVF or fertility treatment - I notice that people on here have waited for 4 yeras, but others 1 etc. Obviously it depends on each case, but would love to hear your views and experiences.

IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatment; and Laparoscopic surgery is very cheap in India. The cost is very low and the medical services are very good in India.

My cousin and her husband got their IVF treatment in India through the Forerunners Healthcare in India and is all praise for this company. She is a known case of PCOS.She is a very happy mother of a baby boy now. She just paid 2500 pounds for the full IVF treatment in India for which she was quoted 8000 pounds in private setup in UK.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the newspapers. I have also read about a Chinese couple who planned surrogacy through the Forerunners Healthcare. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery and infertility treatment like IVF, IUI, and ICSI abroad for low price. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery and treatment can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.

My doctor says generally if you have no problems and are healthy then you should try for 1 year to 1 1/2 years. After that then he would suggest trying with fertility drugs like Clomid and if that doesn't work after 4 cycles then going with something more. So if its already been a full year I would start asking the doctor now and telling him that you will continue to try but that soon if nothing happens you would like to move to the next step. Good Luck!

I set up an appt with my doctor and so did my husband. They tested his sperm count and I got a full pelvic exam to make sure everything was looking good. Also we both had blood work for STDs, and any other blood problems

We did not have any problems there so my doctor suggested we relax and keep trying for another 6 months before being sent to a fertility doctor. Well 5 months later we did conceive. It just takes some people longer then others and the more you stress the longer it takes ( like it's easy to not stress).

If you do not feel like your doctor is doing enough start looking for another one.

you have to go to your doctor then he will referee you to a gynaecologist (mine was at the the local hospital)

before your appointment you'll be asked to see a nurse and be weighed and be asked so,e questions like how often you make love, do you have regular periods, and such like

then you go to to see the gyno he will send you off and you'll have to have quite a few tests (this is the frustrating part as it seems to take forever)
this is usually what they test
blood tests, ovary scan, and a lap and dye test (to check if your tubes a clear) and they also test your partners sperm

after this you go back to the gyno and he will tell you whats wrong
and also how your partners sperm is as well.

then you'll discuss what medication you'll be given usually the first port of call is clomid (this is boost the eggs)

the success rates are getting better and better with the drugs and ivf with ivf the wait and vary with different areas but it is normally anything between 2 - 5 years with the nhs but there's lots of other things to try first and ivf is usually the last resort so to speak and it's most expensive

whilst your waiting for appiontments and tests i'd suggest you try and get as healthy as you can quit the fags (if you smoke) and lose any access weight.
good luck

p.s if like you say all the tests come back okay then they call it unexplaned fertilly and you'll still get fertilly treatment of different kinds and you'll still get clomid to boost your eggs as the first thing they do.

Your treatment tends to depend on your doctor. The first step my Dr. did after a year of trying was to put me on Clomid. Clomid is a medication that increases of brings on ovulation. I have found that prescribing this medication is often the first step. Clomid can be taken for up to six cycles. You typically start on 50mg of the medication and it can be increased up to 150mg. There is also testing that your Dr. may perform. Hysterosalpeniogram (HSG) is a test where they check that your tubes are clear and free flowing. They perform this test by injecting a dye through your tubes via catheter. Your partner will likely go through a semen analysis. If after several cycles of the Clomid you are not pregnant, he will likely refer you to a fertility specialist. If you do not have confidence in your doctor, then do research about what you want done and request those things from him, or you may consider getting another doctor. Also many infertility specialist will see you without a referral from your doctor. I would try Clomid first. Many couples are successful in getting pregnant with this medication.

Good Luck!!!!

Couples considering IVF are normally advised that before approaching their GP about assisted conception, they should have been trying for a baby, by having regular unprotected sex, for one year. At this stage, a medical evaluation will be required to determine the situation before any treatment begins. This may include physical examinations; tests to check blood hormone levels, ovarian function and sperm quality, x-rays of the reproductive organs, and perhaps a laparoscopy or hysterosalpingogram to pick up anything that an x-ray may miss, such as blockages or adhesions in the pelvic cavity.

it can take 18mths for a healthy couple to conceive so I would suggest that you keep trying for at least another 6mths before seeing your gp. Take folic acid and eat healthily, being over and under weight can also affect fertility and the chances of conceiving. Ensure that your having sex during your most fertile time of the month. Basic fertility tests consist of blood tests, semen analysis and an ultra-sound examine. You would likey also get a smear or swabs done to check for any underlying problems/infections. good luck
