I'm a nurse. A number of things could cause this. It depends on what's going on in the persons life at the time. Stress, iron deficiency, or it could be a medical condition that has yet to be diagnosed. I would schedule an appointment, you could just need a muscle relaxant. Take care.

Take a look at your hormone levels. They may need to be adjusted. You could have Restless Leg Syndrome, or Mytral Valve Prolapse, or thyroid problems, or all three. See an endocrinologist. They can investigate any number of things to see what might be happening with you.

My partner used to wake up kicking. Sometimes screaming. He said he wasn't dreaming. he gave up white bread and white sugar and so far so good no more crazy waking.
I sleep very well, it takes me no time at all unless I have something on my mind then I have to get up and rectify it: write it down or organize my stuff for the next day... then I'm OK. I guess in my case it's stress.

Are you exercising during the day? That'll help wake you up during the day and prepare you to sleep at night.

Stop drinking caffeine if you are, and fill up on water.

If those areas of your life are fine, then look into a deeper problem.
