Your Midwife told you that because it is better for you and the baby if you sleep on your side, partially due to the fact that it puts less pressure on your Aorta which supplies blood to the placenta. Medical stuff aside, I am a back sleeper as well, and found it helpful to get a body pillow to rest my legs and put my weight on. You can find them at discount stores, or you can order a specialty one such as the "Pregnancy Pillow" at this site.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Hope this helps. :)

Well, the thing about doctors and midwives telling pregnant women to make sure to sleep on their side is all great in theory, but like you, I found it impossible to stay alseep on my side all night! Have you tried a body pillow? Or even one of those expensive pregnancy pillows? Either way, try to have a pillow between your knees, and as your belly gets bigger, you may want to have a pillow for that too (Hence the suggestion for a body pillow) The pillow(s) will help take pressure off your hips and knees and might make sleeping on your side a bit more comfortable. Another thing that worked for me was sleeping in my husband's oversized beanbag since it formed around me and offered me the support I needed. I know that's not a pratical solution for the long term, but when you're pregnant and exhausted ANYTHING helps! lol.

Honestly yes. It will get worse. I am 31 weeks pregnant and I rarely ever get a good nights rest. Try getting some extra pillows or a body pillow for pregnant women and see if those help. Also you can sleep in a recliner if that is easier for you.

Your midwife told you to sleep flat? Yikes, I'd find another midwife. You should be sleeping on your side to prevent the weight of your uterus from pinching the nerves in your spine. The left side is the best for digestion.

Unfortunately, the aches and pains are one of those nasty things we women have to put up with. The best I can suggest is to take tylenol.
