Yes, he died during a war, but the interesting part is the legend about his last words:

He died during the roman attack on the city of Syracuse, Sicily, during the second Punic War. He was drawing geometrical figures in the sand when a Roman soldier came by. Archimedes said: "Noli turbare circulos meos!" (Don't mess up my circles!) The soldier was not amused and killed him.

Archimedes was in Syracuse (Greek) when the Romans invaded the city. He died the same day the city was invaded. The famous historian and biographer Plutarch offered three versions of Archimedes death. First Archimedes was working on a diagram for one of his problems. Totally absorbed, he had not noticed the Roman invasion. A soldier commanded him to come to the general. Archimedes declined, saying he could not go before he had worked out his problem. The soldier killed him with his sword. The second version is that a soldier with his sword drawn came running toward Archimedes and killed him. The third version is that Archimedes carried astronomical instruments and a Roman soldier killed him for a loot of gold or some sort of treasure.

The city was turned over to the troops to pillage as they pleased, after guards had been set at the houses of the exiles who had been in the Roman lines. Many brutalities were committed in hot blood and the greed of gain, and it is on record that Archimedes, while intent upon figures which he had traced in the dust, and regardless of the hideous uproar of an army let loose to ravage and despoil a captured city, was killed by a soldier who did not know who he was. Marcellus was distressed by this; he had him properly buried and his relatives inquired for—to whom the name and memory of Archimedes were an honour.

The "genius" turned out to be an idiot. A Roman soldier ordered him to stop working, and he mouthed off to the centurion for messing up his circles. Sure, I don't justify the Roman's brutality, but Archimedes was a total moron for mouthing off and deserved it for the same reason that anyone who does something stupid deserves to pay the price.

He was one of the first people to majorly study pi, so when he had been so involved in his work that he did not know Syracuse had already been taken over by the Romans, he said to a soldier in Greek, "Don't mess up my circles!"

His being killed while working on a problem turned out to be a myth. He probably died because a soldier killed him, just like many of the other people died. Though I think Marcus had ordered that he not be killed.

There was a war and he was killed along with others when Corsica (I think it was Corsica) was invaded.
