Typically, if you're under 35 weeks, your doctor will try to prevent early labor. To be on the safest side, 37 weeks is the earliest you should have the baby, any earlier could result in problems. I had my son at 35 weeks and he had jaundice for a few weeks, and had to undergo extra testing because he was that early. (Carseat tests, blood tests, etc). But he WAS healthy.

It is best for the baby to go to full term. Survivability of the baby is especially dependent upon a sudsy substance that the baby forms in her or his lungs that keeps the air sacs in a newborn's lungs open. That substance ,surfactant, doesn't appear in a baby until after 6 - 7 months. Without surfactant, a baby suffers and can die. There are artificial surfactants that are being used today that are sprayed/skirted into a premature newborn's lungs at birth to help his or her chances of survival. Because of surfactant presence beginning at around 6 - 7 months, traditionally it has been considered safest for a baby to be born after at least 7 months. But, as I said, every day is needed by the baby till full-term for many reasons.

Most babies can survive without external help by 38 weeks. Between 34-38 weeks, they have a good chance, but may have to spend some time in NICU. I've heard of babies surviving as early as 24 weeks, but that means months in the hospital and a lot of touch-and-go times. Also, a child may experienced serious health issues when born that early.

I think your first answer was right. You are considered full-term at 37 weeks but i do not think doctors would stop labour anytime after the 35 week mark!
