What does it mean to be a tank?

A tank in WoW is a player that has a lot of armor and hit-points. They're able to take a lot of hits. Their job is to keep the enemy hitting them instead of the other players.
A tanking paladin is a paladin who specializes in holding the enemy on him. There is no 'normal' paladin, really. There are three specializations: Protection, Retribution, and Holy. Protection is the tank. Retribution is DPS (damage per second), which means you deal out lots of damage quickly, but can't take as many hits. Holy is the healing part of the paladin class.

tanking paladin soley has one purpose to tank! Which if you get into raiding and doin instances is extremely a must have. Mages, priests, warlocks all especially rely on the tank to keep the aggro off themselves since the pally can take much much much more damage. I guess a normal pally will be just average in tanking, healing, and dps which honestly is not a good pally. There are many different combination you could try that would be effective. Check out www.worldofwarcraft.com and go to the class forums and check out the paladin one to see what other people suggest. Right now I just made a paladin and I am going toward protection and healing. Hope this helps and have fun!

retribution is probably 1 of the better tanker's since it increase how much your retribution aura does chance to do more damage = hold aggro more and if they do run after someone else use aid or something it makes 3 enemies HAVE to target you and it has a 15 second cooldown and use concencrate for easier crowd holding

to tell you the truth i dont really play w0w but ive heard "tanks" b4. the tank paladin has rly high defence.

tanks are built up with high defense, which in turn helps in raids and distracts mobs from other players...
