As the cloud that formed our sun collapsed-a protostar in the center ignited. The heat vaporized and the radiation drove away volatile materials closer by the sun (think torrents of solar wind); not much material was left and what was left over was stuff with real high melting temperatures, the rocky material out of which the four small terrestrial planets formed.
Farther out past the "snow line" where abundant things like water, ammonia, methane and carbon dioxide could condense out of the disc, huge planet cores formed, so large they were able to grab on to the really light material the smaller planets couldn't keep (hydrogen, helium) and a "runaway accretion" took place and we have our four huge Jovian planets.
Thats the current theory anyways...

The inner planets were gas originaly, but when they were young, and the sun still forming, the sun 'stole' the gas from the closer planets. Pluto is not a gas planet, nor the ones after, but that's probably because they did not form in the same way, and were just meteors that were captured in the magnetic/gravitational field of the early sun.
it also depends on the heat of the planet, and the elements in place, as this may also decide why one planet is rock, the rest gas.

Imagine a cloud of gas and dust in space was disturbed, maybe by the explosion of a nearby star (called a supernova). This explosion made waves in space which squeezed the cloud of gas and dust.
Squeezing made the cloud start to collapse, as gravity pulled the gas and dust together, forming a solar nebula. Its just like a dancer that is spinning, the speed she spins increases as she pulls in her arms, thus the cloud began to spin as it collapsed.
Eventually, the cloud grew hotter and denser in the center, with a disk of gas and dust surrounding it. So you have a ball, that was hot in the center with a large surrounding disc that is cool at the edges.
As the disk got thinner and thinner, particles began to stick together and form clumps. Some clumps got bigger, as particles and small clumps stuck to them, eventually forming planets or moons . Near the center of the cloud, where planets like Earth formed, only rocky material could stand the great heat. Icy matter settled in the outer regions of the disk along with rocky material, where the giant planets like Jupiter formed.
As the cloud continued to fall in, the center eventually got so hot that it became a star, the Sun, and blew most of the gas and dust of the new solar system with a strong stellar wind. By studying meteorites, which are thought to be left over from this early phase of the solar system, scientists have found that the solar system is about 4,600 million years old!

The Sun is made up of mostly hydrogen and helium. The terrestrial planets are all rock and the gaseous planets have a rocky core with mainly hydrogen and helium gas. The planets are made up of the left over material from the formation of the sun.

I hope this isn't a too serious question.
The scientists have yet to find the answer, if they are looking for it.
Could be the planets closest to the sun are the oldest and the gasses change form into what we call solids, forming a crust over the Earth. The inner earth is still a boiling mass of liquid until it spews out of vulcanoes and forms a crust once cooled.

Because of the different heat levels in each planet and the sun, causes different element to form or not. Also gravity affects the outcome - and sometimes just a bit of luck too!

During the big bang all of the elements were subjected to the same force so the elements with larger mass are slowed fastest by the suns gravity?
This is by no means fact.
