We always hear about the Aztec, Mayan and Incan civilizations, yet were there any other prominent civilizations or cultures prior to the coming of the Europeans in South America?

There were literally hundreds of significant nations before the arrival of white people. The Iroquois federation was so advanced in their method of government that much of the American system was modeled after them. The so called "five civilised tribes" of the Southeast were successful farmers living in permanent villages long before any outside influence. Some of the Pueblo cultures had cities of more than a million inhabitants prior to 1000 AD. The early mound builders along the Mississippi and Ohio drainages were expert engineers and apparently, from archaelogical evidence, had trade relations with peoples of both coasts and deep into what is now Canada. The list goes on and on. I hope this was of some help.

In Chaco Canyon, there were the Anazazi Indians who built great structures in the pueblos and buttes of New Mexico. There were also the Mississippians who were known for the building of massive dwellings known as mounds. Both civiliziations had advanced social structures and flourishing cities founded on farming rather than the hunter gatherer way of living.
The Mississippians were proficient in trade and commerce as well and had contact with a great many other tribes ranging from the Ojibway in Canada, to the Aztecs in Mexico.

Yes, in North America there were:
the Mound Builders (espcially Adena and Cahokia cultures) between the Mississippi and the Appalachians,
the Osage Nation on the edge of the Great Plains,
the Cherokee Nation in what is now Georgia,
the Six Nations (later called the Iroquois Confederacy) around the Great Lakes
the Anasazi in Colorado/New Mexcio (ancestors of the Navajo and Hopi who built Mesa Verde, etc)
the Kwakiutl in the Pacific Northwest (who built great cedar halls and totem poles)
