I am an atheist because I don't believe in deities and the word atheist describes this state of disbelief. I don't believe in deities because no argument or evidence presented to me in support of their existence has been convincing.

1. Biology adequately describes life and emotions without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

2. Astronomy adequately describes the formation of stars/planets/universe/etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

3. Geology adequately describes the evolution of the Earth, land formations, etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

4. Psychology describes the human psyche better than appealing to mystical invisible dieties

5. Appealing to mystical invisible dieties is an appeal to ignorance

6. There's no physical evidence for the existence of mystical invisible dieties

7. A myriad of mystical invisible dieties have been posited by emphatically superstitious societies and have been proven to be products of overly active imaginations (today's religion is tomorrow's myth) and ignorance.

8. Believing in mystical invisible dieties seems to become quite absurd when those who posit the mystical invisible dieties begin explaining why and how they exist in the face of contradictory physical evidence.

9. As scientific knowledge increases, the role of the mystical invisible dieties oddly gets pushed further and further back.

10. Mystical invisible dieties are mystical invisible dieties (ie can never be found by empirical methods)

We atheists are nothing like what the church leaders are fond of charicaturing us as. We are freethinking individuals who are able to see the Big Picture without the blinders of religion. We do not live in despair, quite the contrary; freethought is incredibly refreshing, liberating, and empowering. We are not nihilists, but lovers of life who see it as all the more precious because there's no eternal afterlife.

We do not need the bribe of heaven or the threat of hell to be good people, we believe in being good for its own sake. Through science and reason, we know more about the true nature of the world we live in than a religion could ever hope to offer.

We are not the enemy of christians and other theists. Our quarrel is with irrationality, wishful thinking, superstitions, intellectual dishonesty, and all other forms of thinking that keep mankind mired in darkness, ignorance and hate.

I believe in A God, but I personally think there are too many "stories" pushed on us and people trying to force us to believe their "story" of who God is and what we should believe in.

I know there is a higher power, there has to be, look around. Life is too extravagant to simply have just formed.

But why must I accept a story that has been passed down for centuries? Who are any of us to say that the Bible is correct...but the Koran is wrong? I think all of those "teachings" were thought up a long time ago as a way to keep society in line. By giving us rules (commandments) and consequences (hell), it gave a lot of people that didn't naturally have morals something to think about before the committed a "sin".

Now, people have allowed themselves to get so wrapped up in what is right or wrong that they have lost the meaning of these teachings. I mean...we have Religious Wars! That is ridiculous.

I don't believe in god because i have been given no good reason to believe in a god. An old book and lots of believers is not a reason.

Also even though science can't explain everything doesn't necessarily mean that it can't do eventually. Replacing science with god seems like shying away from a challenge. It is tempting to take the easy way out and attribute everything to god.

Also, by saying that god created the universe, it does not solve the problem of something coming out of nothing (i.e. the creation of the universe) because you would still have a god that has come from nothing. It just pushes the problem one step further away. It does not answer it.

I believe in God because of the every day miracles that man could have never achieved. For instance take a good look in the mirror and what do you see?. When I look in the mirror I see that I have eyes to see, hears to hear, legs to walk, arms, fingers , etc. There is not a human on this earth who could have created a body to that degree of perfection. I feel Gods presence in my life daily and he speaks to our hearts in a still small voice. For instance have you ever attempted to do something that you had no business doing and something on the inside said no you should not do that, that is one of the ways that God will speak to you. The reason why you don't get it is because you can not see God physically. God is a spirit and that is how we worship him. I suggest that you read the Bible especially Genesis, that explains how God being a spirit spoke the word and created a world and made man in his image.I can go on and on , but I will stop for now. Also if you do not understand the Bible, you may get the Bible in storybook form from bookstores.

sure. St Nick as you call him became a genuine guy or woman (actual) God isn't ( Jesus became his son and in basic terms a factor of God as are you and that i) the legend of Santa Claus grew over the years and Centuries. The spirit of that legend does seem now and lower back doing stable issues. Now If this is an Act of God or no longer isn't probably all that important considering God acts with the aid of others and is amazingly prepared to permit Santa Claus take the credit.

It may be a question of family values. Or simply personal opinion. Sometimes we need to have the support from someone higher above us. We also need moral values to guide ourselves after (those preached by the Bible, the Koran, etc). It also depends on the civilisation we live in. Muslims are mostly religious, it is part of their identity, while it may not be so with Christians.

I believe in God because i don't think the world created itself. I don't think something can develop out of nothing. (the big bang theory) Who created the very first atom? where did the energy come from? to me its more unbelievable that one would not believe in Him than to believe in Him. Evolution does not clarify everything. I think people don't believe in Him because they lost hope either by the death of a loved one or an unanswered prayer. or maybe they didn't grow up in a religious family.

No god:
How does one reconcile omnipotence, omnibenevolence and omniscience with this world and the life on it. And, why are there so many billions of people living in entire, huge countries whose culture has nothing remotely like the xian god and jesus. Here is a post I did before on the topic:

Because I look at what life was like for human beings for the past 40,000 years (maybe 6,000 for you). People lived for an average of 30-40 years. More than 50% of children died before age one (until about 100 years ago!). I look at thousands of children permanently blinded by parasites they get from playing in creeks in underdeveloped countries.

Then I look at children of modern developed countries, of any religion. I see that they live until their EIGHTIES!! Have all their teeth for a very long time. Have excellent health, etc... And I see that this has nothing to do with religion or god. It is medicine and science. So was it god's plan that hundreds of generations of people would suffer and die in their 40's and suddenly in the 19th and 20th century, everything would get better?

That's nothing other than sadistic.

I also look at all the different gods and interpretations of these gods for the past 4,000-5,000 years. I see how silly it is to point to one religion in the roman era and say "Ah, THIS is the correct one!"

I also posted this in answer to that question:
* The bible has many contradictions
* The bible shows the OT god to be violent and bloodthirsty. He also kills thousands of children.
* For thousands of years, man has had a lifespan of 30-40 years. 100 years ago in the US, 50% of children died before age 1. Modern medicine has greatly reduced this. During eras in western history when the catholic church was in charge and belief in god and church attendance was required, this did not change. So prayer seems not to have been the answer.
* The history of religions and gods seems to show that man has no consistent image or view of what god is or does.
* The bible is open enough to interpretation that if you walked into a church and asked 3 people questions about the bible or god's will, you would get probably 8 different answers.
* People kill each other in god's name every day and he apparently does nothing to stop it.
* 50% of conceptions do not result in birth
* 1 in 8 pregnancies result in twins and one twin is eventually reabsorbed.
* Children are born with no brains, with no limbs, retarded, blind.
* Children go blind from parasites every day, children suffer asthma, and other diseases

because we seek answers on our purpose in this world...
there are things that science couldn't explain until today...
there are many scientific findings that were written in the godly books thousands of years before science discover it...
there should be something or divine being that creates this magnificient world and govern it...
maybe we can say that it is just coincidence...

but maybe god make it look like a coincidence...
to be realized by learned human...

they choose not to.... but why when they are surprised or shocked they still say Oh My God????
They are just trying to run away from what they call invisible handcuffs... to get that destructive extra freedom...
