Do they? I thought they both zipped up in the middle! It's always been the tradition for male and female jackets and shirts to have their buttons on different sides, though - but I don't know why.

I actually have no idea lol. I'm a girl, I wear blokes' clothes sometimes (I wear what I like, bugger what the label says as per size, gender, brand etc lol) and I've never known why. I'm guessing it's to keep a difference between the gender. That said, i've worn quite a lot of guys' jeans that just have the buttons and no zip... skate jeans, normally.

It is actually from Victorian times the reason for this. When a female was being dressed by her maid it was easier for her to button (no zips then) left to right, whilst a man who dressed him self would have a different view point as he would be fastening from the opposite direction. I can't remember why i know this, i now feel quite sad that i do ha ha :-)

Female clothing typically has all the buttons / whatever on the opposite side because women used to have other people dress them. Seriously.

To line up with the buttons on your shirt, Ha ha. Next you will want to know why shirts button on opposite sides. It is probably a fact lost in time.

Begbie got it right. It's a throw back to an era when servants dressed the lady of the house. When the servant was facing the misstress of the house, the buttons were placed opposite so as to make it easier to do. This 'tradition' remains in fashion today.

male and female began withopposing buttons, to allow easy access to the saber or sword with the right hand for males. Now our zippers have replaced where buttons once were.
