The 1.3 CVH engine does rattle when a bit worn. They all do. Dry up the top of the engine due to lack of lubrication getting up there
No short cure other than replacement engine. A bit drastic on an older car but fact

The rattle could be not enough oil in the engine, A worn camshaft, Noisy tappets, or worn Engine Mountings. Take your pick.

Rattles or knocks?? Could be as simple as a loose heat shield or muffler bracket, battery holder , belt or radiator shroud.
Check for loose parts when the engine is running cold so you don't get burned.

if it's a cast iron push rod engine change the timing chain. if it's ohc suspect the hyd tappets unless you've run it out ofoil sometimes in the past, then you'll need to replace the engine

once you've guide transmission it may well be the grab. that is what got here about to my ninety 8 RAV4 now that is rushing like it grow to be. attempt checking on your oil filters, upload some elements on your gasoline, etc. replace your spark plugs and wires in case you've not done this in a lengthy time period too.
