Most antacids (Tums, for example) contain calcium carbonate. Carbonates are weak bases, which neutralize stomach acids. While stomach acids are strong acids (hydrochloric acid), weak bases are used because strong bases are caustic. They would cause burns in the mouth and throat.
Calcium carbonate is very safe. It has an added benefit of providing calcium to supplement dietary intake. It is also known as chalk.

o.k. i'll make a fool of myself again, just by trying
let me know if i got it wrong, i don't mind learning.
recently only because of how sick i got i have tried to figure it out in a way i could use.
i used vinager ( acid) and baking soda.
here is where my knolgic ( and spelling) my get insane.
after reading on the lable of the bakingsoda box that it was only good for heart burn, i tried the vinager, but if i put too much i wanted to puke, what it came down to was about 1 cap of vinager could keep the extra gass going about 12 hours only if i put it in a good 8 oz. of water( vinager staight up i'd puke up)at the same time i was told i had been release with vrs-mrsa the only one of two anti biotics i could use would cause kidney damage, i tried the med.s but couldn't finish the full course, not thinking i was still using the vinager.
please bear with me, i said i might sound insane.
because of viral pnuemonia i couldn't use anything but was told to wait and look out for viral menagitis.(i was feeling worse but started to use 2caps water) given an inhaler and told it was bacterial bronchial pneumonia. i put another cap in the coffee cuz it seemed like that made the gas worse. tried to make dishwashing liquid out of the baking soda cuz it absorbs smells.
then when i began to get to the point no one knew how come i suddenly got well( poof!) my husband showed up with two grand-mal seizures out of no where, but he was getting sick befor that for five days too. ( he did the dishes, remember th baking soda aborbs smells) he had be seen and given a nasal swab for the vrs--mrsa cuz it's a respritory airborn combo. but we'd kissed, before i knew iside the hospital that either one of was sick.
then stopped using the baking soda, but kept using the vinager, this time he didn't care even if he knew it was there.
but i had to answer this question for my self, how did i make my husband sick. i didn't look in meds, i looked at the vinager and bakingsoda. right down to the base c-o atoms, i wanted to know.
this is where insanity reaches no boundreis,(spelling too)
the vrs-mrsa that couldn't be "cured" in me was already prooven by blood work (acidic) c-o binds are broken by this, what i didn't know then was it worked only because the very slow way i had turned my systems acidy enough to do it. but my husband? he had gotten the same bacterial infection not by a sneeze but a kiss, untill he found out that i'd been using the vinagar to put in coffee, he drank it too, but found out when he start doing the dishes( base) we didn't see the seizures but the effects of lowering his ph and adding to it the base needed to re-consentrate that bacteria. result-two grand mal seizures, no previous history, immediate life threatening situation.
what we had done was come smack against two basic principles of chemestry cuz we go sick.
the end is neither one of us has any evedience of either illness. the doctors still want tests to see what happened,
but it's cuz of things like this some people still think i'm smarter than i am.
what i found out was because of the links within the atomic structure between the c-o universe we live in we'd busted that crud apart, but if we'd rush in with the vinagar, we'd of ended up bleeding for no reason, it works for every part of the body, weaker and slowly it bust the crud, too much, it would have killed us, the same bonds exist in every part of our bodies, the difference with my husband- he stopped the acidic change over and placed instead th base, it to five days to watch hime get sick, 5 minutes to save his life cuz i am an epileptic too, so i knew the drills. he kept drinking the coffee ( with the vinagar) yesterday, he had to go to a nuero for follow up, nothing, but they want tests too,
it seems that no one has heard of bacterial menigitis,
i am not any kind of chemist, smart a### or anything. but the reason why ant(i) acids neutralize stomach acids, it's not the meds. look at the thing they use, it's mostly a base element compound.
look for the chemical names of baking soda,
i know i gotta say this now.
you know thwere are a lot of nuts who'd think i'm advocateing vinagar for ANY sickness. NO WAY
you'd kill yourself go see a doctor.
mr. chem. -remember what your looking for ant(i) acids-base, absorbs stomcach acid, it's in the name.
