I had a hamster, Squiffy, and he also broke his leg... again my vet said just to leave it. The hamster will regulate himself, if it's too painful he won't move it and, when it is getting better, he will exercise more!
I just put in more kapok into his nest to make it warmer and softer, removed the fairly deep food bowl and replaced it with something shallower, like a saucer, so he didn't have to lift himself to reach the food. Oh, and I got him some mealworms as a special treat. Yuk, they are alive and wriggling but contain lots of protein which hamsters need and which are good for theirh health. Squiffy LOVED them!
So, just love and good food and let him rest the leg when he wants.

Bless! The best thing to do is to limit the movement for a while whilst his leg heals. It sounds hard, but take away any ladder up to higher shelves, or even remove them if possible. This will limit the chances of him causing further damage. If you have a small cage, or tank, then move him to that whilst it heals. Don't allow him access to playballs, or let him run free whilst it heals, and he will be fine.
There is no special food, and he will feel better if everything else is familiar.

Mine broke her front leg once jumping off a shelf in her cage. You made a wise move by bringing her to the vet. My suggestion would be to make she she stays on the bottom level of her cage, if it is multi-storied and try to keep her from climbing the side of the cage or jumping around to get out. Put lots of tissue in there for her to make a bed and made a few extra treats. Most of all just give it time.

Aww Lexi, that's awful. I'm very attached to my hamster as well.
But the vet has given it the okay, so I'm sure it will be fine.
Maybe you shouldn't expect to much out of it, such as daily handling. I guess it will just want to a snuggled place to sleep, plenty of fresh water and food... there isn't much else you can do.
At the pet shop they do have calcium chews, or drops you can add to the water. That may help the bones repair.
I'm sure it will be fine. Best of luck x

Hi there
I will say move his food bowl water bottle and bedding to the ground floor.... take out any extra shelves if any, and make sure he does not climb the sides, put extra bedding in there for him and give him some xtra treats, including fruit and veg, just give him time and peace and quite and let him be warm and cosey.
Also take the wheel away.

I think the best you can do is just let himget well on his own, make sure his food and water are low enough for him to reach and also his bed so he doesn't have to climb for them, but you may find he will do this anyway.

Hamster chocolate buttons (not cadburys) should cheer him right up, and take his wheel away just now.
