Everyone--ive been having a problem with my car for a while now... I drive a 89 Chevy Corsica.... and when I go to stop at a stop sign/light my car idle's really hard, and sometimes dies on me. It's freaking me out, not to mention embarrassing! Can you give me a guess of what it is? We put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner fluid in my car the other night to see if it would help..... how long does that stuff take, and can u tell me what it would be if not that?!

You'll need to go through at least half of the tank before the injector cleaner shows any noticeable effect. I would also look into changing my spark plugs (for less than $10, its the cheapest thing to try.) Otherwise, it could be the fuel pump or fuel filter, but more likely a stuck idle Air Control Valve, PCV Valve, or a simple vacuum leak.
Good luck!

If the injector cleaner doesn't help a tune up may solve the problem (spark plugs, plug wires, air filter, pcv valve - not real expensive & general maintenance) if it still does it then you should have the fuel pressure checked or check for a vacuum leak. ignore the guy saying stockings/suspenders. He is either being sarcastic, doesn't know anything about cars, or desperate for a answer to get some points, his comment has nothing to do with vehicles.

Your due for a "tune up". That means the shop technician checks all your basic fluids, filters and ignition items like the distributor, spark plugs, plug wires. He'll clean or replace your PCV valve and clean your throttle plate and bore. After he's done all the basics, he'll see if the engine idles better. If not, then he will start testing to see what's causing the rough idle. A "vacuum leak" or IAC (Idle Air Control) problem can be the cause.

You can check the fuel pressure to see if it is fuel related. More than likely, it is a fuel pump. This is in the gas tank and can be quite costly to replace. I would recommend changing the fuel filter first.

Try increasing your idle speed. Check your owner's manual or take it to the service station.
Good luck!
