It is not conducted to treat anything. It is conducted to find out the state/condition of the heart, while engaged in physical activity. It is a standard test done for any insurance policy of large amounts, and involves walking on a treadmill, while an ECG machine monitors the heartrate, etc.

He was describing the pre-test probability that the patient has heart disease. You may want to look into Bayes' Theorem. People would like to have a simple yes-or-no answer to tests, with complete accuracy in all cases. The world in which that exists is on the other side of the looking glass. When tests are done, there are four resultant possibilities: the patient has the disease and the test says so (true positive), the patient has the disease and the test says he doesn't (false negative), the patient does not have the disease but the test says he does (false positive), or the patient doesn't have the disease and the test says he doesn't (true negative). A patient with a low pre-test probability of heart disease and an abnormal treadmill test may actually have a lower chance of actually having heart disease than does a patient with a high pre-test probability with a normal treadmill test, because of the frequency of false-positive tests in the former group exceeding the number of people with heart disease; and the number of false-negative tests in the high-risk group is substantial.
