I'm extremely confused about cancelling out fractions in Arithmetic.
Everytime I come out with with an answer to a problem, the teacher always marks it wrong. Am I aloud to post specific problems here?. Okay, well, here are some:
3/4 x 4/5=6/2
16/3 x 9/8= 144/24
14/15 x 9/7= 126/105
17/5 x 5/12= 85/60

Can anyone please tell me if the answers are right are not? and if not,can u tell me the real answers and how u got them?
Thanks

Remember the basics first. Multiply the numerators. Multiply the denominators. That gives you a correct answer no matter what. However, your teacher may say to "always put your answer in simplest form", meaning she wants you to reduce the resultant fraction. That means that there's no number that divides into both the numerator and denominator of the answer. If so, reduce the fraction to make that true.

Cancellation is just an easy way to help you reduce the fraction to it's simplest form. Here's an example using the basic rule for multiplying fractions above:

(3/4) X (4/5) = (3 X 4)/(4 X 5)
But you can "cancel out" any number that appears in both the numerator and denominator of the answer. So, since a "4" appears in both the numerator and denominator, you erase both of them and end up with 3/5 for the answer in simplest form.

the answers are as follow...

3/4 x 4/5=3/5
16/3 x 9/8= 144/24 = 6
14/15 x 9/7= 126/105 = 1 1/5
17/5 x 5/12= 85/60 = 1 5/12

(basically, you've got only the first one wrong. the rest are correct, but you can simplify them to make them better answers.)

with regards to cancelling out fraction, you can:

cancel out the numerator (top) with the denominator (below) if both numbers are the same.
for e.g. in 3/4 x 4/5, you can cancel out the no. "4", den place "3" above "5". This is how i got the answer 3/5.

another case is when there is no same number for you to cancel out. in this case, you multiply all the numerators together and all the denominators together. then, place the multiplied numerator above the multiplied denominator, and simplify.

for e.g., 16/3 x 9/8 = 144/24 = 6 (simplified)

hope this helps! gd luck=)

3/4x 4/5=3/5
cancel the two 4's and make them 1
16/3 x 9/8=6/1=6
cancel the 3and make it 1 and 9 and make it 3
cancel the 16 and make it 2 and 8 and make it 1
14/15 x 9/7=6/5=1 1/5
cancel the 9 and make it 3 and 15 and make it 5
cancel the 14 and make it 2 and 7 and make it 1
17/5 x 5/12=17/12= 1 5/12
cancel the two 5's

Most places require a 24 hour notice to stop any charges, but it would have said on the website of the hotel if there is a fee but the sooner you cancel the more likly you are of not getting a cancellation fee.
