there are 2 laptops I don't know which to get one has Windows Vista Home Basic and one has Windows XP but it has a "free" (about £15) upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium. They are nearly the same price but if I bought the second one would I need to buy more memory?

I only want a laptop for internet, msn, homework, Sims Life Stories and a thing that lets me watch TV on it. What kind of laptop would be best xp or vista? Sims needs lots of memory and at least 1.8GHz.

sorry to say this but your best sticking with XP, until they fix all the proplems with vista, crashing freezing and all the other sh*t you get with the new programs, good luck

Both they computers are pretty much the same (in spec)
But if you were to go vista (wouldn't recommend it just now I'd wait 5-6 month or so till they fix driver issues etc..) you will be wanting a computer with a minimum of
2.6 MHz (3.0MHz and above recommend)
1.5 Gig Memory RAM (DDR or DDR2) (2.0 Gig Recommend)
80 Gig Hard Drive (IDE or SATA)
128 Mg Graphics Card (256 Mg Recommend)
The above spec's i posted is about the minimum required to run the actual Operating System it's self but you will need it if you were to play games and run mutable Apps

The Premium version is better, because it has the new "Aero" interface (all the fancy translucent glass) and Windows Media Centre (which is good is you have a TV tuner), backup etc.
Some of the features for syncing laptops are only in Premium as well (see http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/choose.mspx) for a more detailed comparison.
If you want the eye candy and mobility features get premium but be prepared to fit at least another 512MB of memory, otherwise stick with XP - there's little improvement in the basic version of Vista.

Vista home Premium is the one to get, not many companys are using the basic and its really not worth bying it.
But with home premium u need at least 1 gb of memory, and to use all the features you really need 2 gb of memory, so ask if its possible to upgrade the memory or look for a laptop with more memory.

The laptop with Home Premium sounds like it would be better for you. If you want to watch TV on your laptop you will need the Media Center, which will require Vista Home Premium. You can find more information at http://www.freevistatips.com

premium comes with overall better features but the operating system itself is just a revamped windows XP. Vista boasts about having security capabilities such as Windows defender - which you can download for free using windows XP! if you really want to get vista get premium but i say stick with xp till the prices com down orgo the way forward with an apple

it really depends on what you want out of vista,the basic is as it is called "basic",it will not have the 3d aero interface or many of the new additions to vista such as voice recognition
however vista basic is the only vista "flavor" that can run well on a 512mb ram machine,the premium and ultimate need 1gb of memory to function correctly.
so its a catch 22 really,if you get vista basic you will save having to buy additional memory but you will loose out on the extras that come with premium
however to use vista premium you will need to upgrade your memory if required but you will gain by getting all the added extras that come with premium
my advice is go for basic,this will give you a idea of what vista is like and if you like it,its possible to upgrade to premium for a small charge by simply downloading a small file directly from microsoft(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/default.mspx)

no you would not need memory but first consider this:
home premium is the the same as home basic exept that it has'nt got "special" media features so if your going to use the laptop for vedios and music home premuim is the way to go.
p.s. although vista has got flashy graphix there is still some argument on if you should stick with XP becuase microsoft is getting really selfish

The Vista Premium one sounds like the better deal, assuming that the Basic one CAN'T run Vista Premium rather than just doesn't come with it
