Diffusion is the process. Attention! Osmosis is somewhat opposite process! In fact, in this latter process, solvent particles spontaneously move from the lower concentration area of solute to the higher one (through a semipermeable membrane) in order, say, to equalize the presence of solvent inside the two sectors. Extremely important phenomenon in biology. On the contrary, you have to "force" the solvent to pass through a membrane the opposite way. This latter is said "reverse osmosis", technically used to deionize water.
