Thay do make external hard drives that connect via USB cable. You can get them anywhere (walmart, staples, circuit city etc.) They range in price and size (GB).
If you want to add a bigger INTERNAL hard drive, you will have to remove the old one and insert a newer hard drive. Then you have to reinstall windows and such.

You can actually buy an external case that holds 2.5" drives for about $20.
Buy whatever size hard drive you want and put in in the external case, then make an exact copy of the internal to the external. You can then swap out the old hard drive and put the new one in. It will be just like before, but more space.
It can also speed up windows reaction times, and loading of programs. Especially if your old one is 4200rpm.
You can also use the old hard drive as an external drive, and it will not require any extra cables besides the single usb that connects it.
It will also be much smaller than a regular external drive.
You can upgrade your ram in one of two ways. You can add an extra stick if you have an open slot inside your computer, or you can replace the existing sticks with larger ones if you dont have an open slot. You can get up to 2gb pieces.
When selecting the ram, you need to know if its ddr or ddr 2. Use a search engine to find the specs on your computer.
Between the two upgrades, it will be about $225.

Buy an external hard drive and use that. This will allow you to off some of the data you don't have immediate use for. I would however get a larger hard drive maybe 200 gig since it won't take anymore space up and is about the same money.
Changing it internally is expensive. It may be hard to get a much larger drive in the lap top and will add weight.

Your laptop only supports 1 HDD probably, so your choices are getting an EHDD that will plug in through USB or upgrade your internal. And with internal you should be able to find where the HDD is on your laptop because you know what your CDROM is and you can hear when your hard drive is spooling up, so it would be the big compartment on one of the sides of your laptop that isnt the cdrom, and where all that noise comes from. Usually its like 2 screws and it comes out.

you may surprisingly easily improve the RAM, you will locate the chip slots under the keyboard or in a panel on the backside. The hd is somewhat trickier, yet possible. To ghost the hd you will choose a converter to alter it from the mini ideee to the typical laptop ideee the place you may hook up 2 drives. Ghost the previous rigidity to a sparkling one throughout the converter on a bench laptop after which you're solid to circulate (hd is often in a panel on the backside, under the keyboard, or is pull out from the realm). At this factor however you would be able to evaluate basically getting a sparkling gadget, laptops oftentimes are not very upgradable, so in case you go with an upgradable gadget you're able to be greater efficient served staring at computers.

Laptop hard disk is just like the removable USB hard disks for that i recommend you to buy new 120 GB removable hard disk and remove the adapter that converts IDE to USB then replace it with the old one on the laptop ((usually placed on the bottom of the laptop)) after that connect the (IDE-USB) adapter to the old 40 GB hard disk. So now you have a laptop with 120 GB Hard drive and mobile hard disk with 40 GB size. its very easy do it yourself.
