This really depends on your average use of the phone.
Everyone I know who started on PAYG eventually takes out a contract as soon as they know they will spend more than 12 months in the UK.
PAYG is cheap if you only ever receive calls and spend your time having friends call you back. This is fine, but will most likely mean the following:
1) You won't spend as much time talking to people as you like
2) Every minute you are on the phone, you are more concerned about how much the call is costing then actually enjoying the conversation with somoeone.
3) You will most likely send far more text messages to make arrangements, etc and will be shocked to realise how much these all add up too.
Contracts these days can be very cheap. Just look online and you will find many options:
Example:
12 month - O2 400 mins + 100 txts (£35 per month but 1/2 price for 8 months)
18 month - O2 400 mins + 100 txts (£1.99 for 7 months and then £30 per month)
So essentially, if you think you are paying more than £24 per month on PAYG, you are better off with a contract. Even if you are paying £15-£20 per month, you are better off not having to restrict your usage and worry about each moment on the phone.
Good luck!

Depends on how you plan to use the phone really, if you use the phone a lot a contract phone will work out better value, but do your homework first, pay as you go phones are good if you dont want to be commited to a contract, and you only plan to use the phone now and then , also with contract you get a wider choice of top phones, as on pay as you go you pay the full price for the phone at the start. for a top phone you are talking £200 plus.on contract these phones are free but you are paying for it each month.

It all depends on usage. If you are a prolific 'texter', make lots of calls etc a Contract would work out cheaper, However, for the occasional use and satisfaction of knowing you can make an emergency call if needed, the pay as you go system works better because the emergency call will work even if you have no credit on the phone.
If you already have a mobile phone on Contract, you can give notice to end it and buy a sim card for another company's service and use it for top up.
If you don't have a mobile phone, a new one will cost! Get one from a friend who no longer needs one or look at e bay.

It depends on what you use your phone for. If you make a lot of calls, or use your phone for work purposes then a contract is probably the most suitable. If, however, you only make a few short calls and send a few texts then Pay as you Go is becoming a much cheaper option. I know Orange offers free texts if you top-up by £10 a month.
Contracts often suck you in with a good deal at first but then start charging you a lot more after the first six months - watch out for small print! :)

I would have to say pay and go . that's all i use you don't want to get stuck in a 12/18 month contract. The Mobile phone game is one BIG CON its only really businesses that benefit from contracts!

Contract. You get much more. Also, a new phone for free when you sign up, and a new one when you renew your contract, generally every 18 months. I pay £25 pm, 200 mins x network anytime, + 100 texts.

I like contract with mobile phones better. I think you get more benefit with a contract. I think young children are better with topping the mobile card up.

Contract because you can get 'free' minutes and call like crazy and let your mom pay for the bills. Pay as you go just basically limits what ever you want to do if you don't have the money.
Have a nice day!
