My keyboard was set up to American settings when I bought it. I have changed the settings, but pressing shift and 3 doesn't bring up the £ sign. Where is it on an American keyboard? (I'm typing this on a different computer, in case you were wondering!!)

Laura ... Try this. You need to use your keyboard's numeric keypad, by the way, so make sure the NumLock function is turned on. If the NumLock function is off, just press the NumLock key.

Okay ... Now, just place your cursor where ever you want your £ symbol to appear. Then press and hold the Alt key and on the numeric keypad, press the "0163" keys and release the Alt key. Your £ symbol should appear in just about any application you have.

You said something about pressing Shift and 3. This sounds like a special function that was set-up for a particular program, but I'm not sure. However, the method I recommended should work in just about any program you have.

I've see there are some software add-ons that might be able to enter your £ character and other special characters with just one keystroke, but I cannot recommend a good one; I haven't had such special needs.

Good luck, Laura.

You can change the keyboard layout using the keyboard control panel applet (start - settings - control panel - keyboard - Input Locales) however this does not affect the layout used during logon (which is by default English (United States)). To change this perform the following: 1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe) 2. Move to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Keyboard Layout\Preload 3. Double click on 1 and change the number to your local layout (you could get this by looking at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Keyboard Layout\Preload1). Click OK 4. You may also change HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\International\Locale to this value however it is not mandatory to do so. 5. Close the registry editor 6. Logoff and then on again Make sure you select a country code that has been installed via the control panel or your system will not boot. U.K. code is: 00000809 and the # is atop the 3, shift + 3 = # ;)

There are 2 simple ways to access characters that are not on the keyboard:

1) You can type the UNICODE value of the character... (In this case 156) while having the NUMLOCK on, and using the numeric keypad, thus: £

2) Use the "charmap" utility to access the characters by clicking on the desired characters to the copy buffer, and "paste" them in the desired place.

No! There are other characters that are also in the wrong place when you set it display the £ sign.

Be careful many of the cheap keyboards on EBay are US keyboard.

no, but we have a $ sign. There's no hot key for this unless you install additional software for it. There is a symbol you can insert from insert --> symbol on word processors. Or you can try editing your auto correct settings. So every time you type $ for example, you'll get the £ sign

You will find all the symbols in MS Word. Go to insert - symbol and scroll down till you find it. You may have to select then copy it then paste it where you are typing or find the short cut (alt+ 0163).
