WOW!
VERY good question!
The "-" in front of a number or variable means NEGATIVE.
________________________________________________
The "-" to the left of " -2 " means that we are dealing with a NEGATIVE number 2 unit value.
In-other-words, we MOVE two places to the LEFT of zero on a number line, we OWE $2, we have a hole that is 2 feet DEEP, etc.

Hope this helps clarify things! :o)

ask your self: what do i'd desire to place for x while 4 - x = 8 ? nicely, permit's upload x to the two factors (to maintain the equality an equality we would desire to do a similar element of the two factors): 4 - x + x = 8 + x for sure - x cancels against + x, so 4 = 8 + x Now subtract 8 from the two factors: 4 - 8 = 8 + x - 8 -4 = x Or, analyzing from appropriate to left: x = -4 . So for this reason, 4 - (-4) = 8 end: subtracting a unfavorable quantity is numerically equivalent to including its (useful) opposite. 2 - (-2) = 2 + 2 = 4 now and returned we are saying: "minus minus is plus" (a double negation , like "no longer no = confident" )

Perhaps the best way to formalize it is to say the -N = (-1) * N
And of course (-1)^2 = 1.
(-1)2(-1)2 = (-1)(-1)2*2= 1*4 = 4.
In defining the integers or rational numbers or real numbers or whatever, the first two defined are in some order 0 and 1. Then -1 can be defined as the number that when added to 1 yields 0. And things move forward from there.

Right, think of it like this-:
minus x minus = positive result
minus x plus = negative result
plus x minus = negative result
plus x plus = positive result
Therefore -2 x +2 = -4
but -2 x -2 = +4
To understand this completely you should learn about complex numbers ie. the square root of -1 (in physics this is called i but in engineering they use j)

The minus sign is not called "minus" in this certain problem. Its called a negative sign. You have -2 in parenthesis multiplied by another -2 in parenthesis.
(-2)(-2)
*Rule - when your multiplying two negative numbers, the result is always positive.
(-2)(-2) = 4

it means "negative". Do this easy way: in multiplication even number of negatives cancel each other out, odd number of negatives stay negative. Practice for a while, and then after a while you will begin to see the thought behind it.
