First, Male and Female hamsters shouldn't be kept together. They aren't "brother & sister" like a human would think. To a hamster everyone of the oppisite sex is a mate. But I guess this part really doesn't matter at this point.

Second, if these were Syrian (larger) hamsters (not dewarfs) they shouldn't even be kept in same sex pairs let alone male/female. They will kill each other because they do not want to live together. Once they kill the other they will eat the dead to get rid of the remains. I 'think' they do this because in the wild it would attract other animals.

Sorry about your lose, but please just keep a single hamster for her on out.

Hamsters are not communal animals. They live by themselves and only come together when mating. If your cage was large enough (with multiple levels and den areas), the chances would have been better that the two could co-exist, but even that wouldn't have been definate. If the cage was smaller (like a fish tank or something) it was only a matter of time before the dominant hamster took over.

if you had them in the same cage they were most likely at the age for matting, and she dint want to mate with her brother so she took her sexual frustration out on him.
