Manned space travel is a challenge--and expensive. but it is also an investment with a very high return. Un the USA we have benefitted from a wide range of new technologies that have improved peoples lives and furthered our economic growth--and provided benefits to the rest of the world as well, including weather and communications satellites, the foundations f computer technology, and medical advances.
For India to invest in space travel is a smart move. Here's some advice from an American--don't make the mistake many of us made in not supporting our space program. On the contrary, you wiill be wise if you insist that your leaders press forward in space, instead of adopting the short-sighted attitude that the USA has done.

I think India should spend the money on the economy. People have already been to space. So the Indians are going to use 20 million dollars so 3 people can float around for a day or 2 and come back. Doesn't make sense to me

Why are people obsessed with India's space race? Satellites and robots can do the exploration at a much lower cost. A manned mission is hugely expensive and would be better spent on health, drought management or flood defences to protect against disasters that keep hitting India.

There are no necessary manned space missions. Everything can be done better, safer, cheaper, easier, and faster with unmanned space missions. I suppose that if you put up a really necessary space satellite (or something) and it broke down, a man might repair it faster. Still, I should think that such a necessary space satellite would and should have several backups.
For India, conquering social problems are much, much more important.

Why are people, especially well to do middle class one's so obsessed with the poor!
How about all you mouthing, give up your TV sets, Ipods, Xboxes, Microwave Ovens, Accuras, live a simple life and sponsor some poor family in India.
I don't know how many area aware, but India picks the best minds from their high schools and TOTALLY pays for their college and stay in England or the US so they can attend MIT, Oxford, Stanford, Columbia, USC, HArvard, Eaton, Cambridge all the way through PHD and then they encourge them to stay in the US for a period of time and work for NASA, IBM and Microsoft. Then they have to return to India and go governmetn service for a period of time to repay this $500,000 educational investment. And it's give to students without POLITICS or PREJUDICE. They look for the 4.0 perfect SAT score kids and see if they want to go to England or the US and become brilliant post graduates!
Oh and my US banks customer service department it OUTSOURCED to India. Capital One dumped on all the over paid US workers and contracted with a company in India to provide phone service. I'm also told the IRS outsources income tax processing to India.
The per capita income and lifestyle has risen in India, largely due to their embracing technology and financing techo-minded students.
It is estimated by some that India will have a "happy days" situation we saw in the 1950s within the next 20-30 years as they take jobs away from England and America and give them to their own people and raise the standarding of living to middle class, which is about $15,000US in India right now. That's enough to get you a house and BMW.
Go take a look at many of the computer science text books, they are written by people from India!
If India doesn't go into space no one will take you there unless you pay $20 million to be a tourist!
Only rocket partners like the USSR are involved with going up there!
Better we spend money on manned space than A-bombs!

Yes. It would give India valuable experience in space research.
-- edit
Space research is a long term investment and requires large amounts of money. In the long run manned space missions will benefit the Indian nation. It is a worthwhile investment.

ABSOLUTELY NO. We are not able to make decent fighter plane, let alone a space ship. It will be a sheer waste of money. Besides, learning through vicarious experience is sufficient in this case.
