My truck doesn't want to heat up, the temp gauge stays on cold, which doesn't let my heater work. The only way I can get it to work is by putting it in passing gear. It is a pretty big truck that drinks alot of gas, can someone help a damsel in distress?

It sounds like your thermostat is stuck open - this means that the radiator is cooling the engine as fast as it tries to warm up Normally, the coolant doesn't start to flow into the radiator until the engine has reached operating temperature. Its a fairly simple fix - any mechanically-minded person could do it in an hour or so.

If you have to drive somewhere, try putting a piece of cardboard over the grille, to cut the amount of air coming in - but watch your temperature carefully, because you might cut off too much air, causing it to overheat. If you see the temp starting to climb above the usual temperature range, tear off a piece of the cardboard, then drive a little more and see what it does. There is no rule saying how much you will need to cover or uncover, so you'll have to do it by trial and error. You can also try gently tapping the thermostat housing with a hammer, which may jar it loose (if it is stuck, and not actually broken) - but remember that if it stuck once, it will probably stick again.

Good luck!

more than likely stuck thermostat, thermostats restrict the flow of coolant until the engine warms up (temp gauge moving) that way the engine can get to operating temperature and give you heat. with it stuck open the coolant just keeps circulating and keeps the engine too cold to supply heat.

your thermostat is stuck open and needs to be changed. if it was stuck closed then the opposite would happen your truck would over heat, the seals get ruined pretty easy, they only cost about 5 to 10 dollars and if you know someone who can do it then it can be changed in about 15 minutes.

Thermostat is either missing or stuck open. Have someone replace it.
