Accordining to OSHA:
"Sit at a comfortable distance from the monitor where you can easily read all text with your head and torso in an upright posture and your back supported by your chair. Generally, the preferred viewing distance is between 20 and 40 inches (50 and 100 cm) from the eye to the front surface of the computer screen (Figure 1). Note: text size may need to be increased for smaller monitors."

it should be at lest 1.5 feet if you are using 15'' monitor and if the monitor is 17'' then it should be nearly 2 feet.
The cause of pain may be the brightness of the monitor.
Here are few suggestions to avoid the eye pain:
1. Always Keep brightness at comfortable level.
2. Don`t work in dark place keep room light at normal level.
3. Flicker the eyes in more numbers then normal.
4. After working for half and hour always do some eye exercises like move the eyes in circular motion in clockwise and anti-clockwise.
5. when pain starts keep index fingers on your eye lids and move the fingers in clock and anti clockwise direction.
6. wash your eyes with cold water.
Hope this will helps you to over come your problem some extent. If it still continuously paining the consultant any eye specialist.

If your eyes are hurting you should get farther away. Also, every once in a while look away from the screen and focus your vision on something farther away.
