Reason i ask is that my husband is at work and i am just wondering ( he is on night shift) if it breaks do i have time to wait for him to come home which will take up to about 40 minutes or should i go straight there. If i am in great pain i will go straight away. Am just bored and wondering? I know in most cases labour starts first ie contractions. I am 38 weeks!

this is something you should discuss with your dr as many have different oippionions on this. I was told that on ce my water breaks to note the time, amount of fluid (gush or slow leak), color (it should be clear), and weather or not there is an odor. If you are feeling ok, the color is clear and there is no funky smell then you should be fine to wait for your husband. When your water breaks it does not mean you are about to give birth at any moment, but generally the baby is delivered within 24 hours. IF the fluid is brown/green, or bloody then you need to get to the hospital or call your your dr right away as this means the baby either had a bowel movement and is in stress or with blood it obviously means soimething is bleeding, posssibly the placenta. IF everything is normal though and you wait to go to the hospital there are some things to avoid suchas baths, douching, sex,a nd tampons...use pads to stop the wetness. Hope this helps! Good luck!

You should call the doctor when the water breaks, and if your husband is at work you should explain the situation (including details of his travel time to the house and your travel time to the hospital). The doctor will tell you when to leave. I understand they don't want to you to wait 12 hours or something because you could get an infection, but they may tell you that you have plenty of time to wait for your husband as long as your contractions are still more than 6 min apart.

If your water breaks you need to contact your Dr. to let them know that you are in the beginning stages of labor. If you are having contractions progress to the hospital. If no contractions ask if is possible to wait, and try to have contractions begin on their own. Go about your day with perhaps shopping, cleaning, or just checking to see if you have everything you will need for baby. The key is to keep your self somewhat active. You could also try other things to bring on labor like nipple stimulation.( Do refrain from sex, once the water has broken there is a chance for infection.)

You may have heard a story about a pregnant woman whose membranes ruptured in a public place and she was very embarassed.

Although having your membranes rupture ("water break") in public concerns many pregnant women, this rarely happens. In reality, few pregnant women experience ruptured membranes in a public place. If this does occur, you will only feel a small amount of extra fluid rather than a gush of water or blood.

When your membranes rupture, usually you are beginning labor. "Water breaking" is a common term used to describe the rupture of the fluid-filled amniotic sac that surrounds your baby during pregnancy.

Once your membranes rupture, you need to call your doctor. The risk of infection increases if the baby isn't delivered within 24 hours. If you are near the end of your pregnancy, ruptured membranes usually signal the beginning of labor.

If your membranes do not rupture prior to the beginning of contractions, your doctor may break the membrane. This involves making a small hole in the amniotic sac. This will feel uncomfortable and you will probably go into labor within hours.

If your membranes rupture and you don't go into labor, your doctor may induce labor with oxytocin, a hormone that causes contractions. You will be given this medication intravenously.

Unless you are in active labor (contractions etc.) you can wait up to 12 hours before you go to the hospital. I know people who when their water breaks, spend the day shopping for food and neccessities for the next few weeks before they go to the hospital. I know others who go the the hospital immediately after their water breaks and end up spending hours upon hours there doing nothing, cuz of course the hospital won't let them leave.

tell him to meet you at the hospital it is no good if you jeopardise the health and safety of your newborn just so he can take you to the hospital

if you are in too much pain call an ambulance or have a neighbour on standby when he is at work

hope this helps dude

Do not wait! This means your uterus is more susceptible to infections. You don't want to wait.
