I'm going to the USA next month and intend on taking travellers cheques with me. Should I purchase them in US dollars or sterling?

I can get my travellers checques commission free. If I use my debit card won't I be charged every time I withdraw?

With the exchange rate the way it is I would suggest checking with your bank to see what they are giving/charging for cheques. I would then probably buy US dollars here with Sterling. The other thing to check is with your debit/credit card and see what rates/charges they have. Many times the best rates are through them. Then you can just get what you want as you go at the cash machines or use plastic to pay.

If you really have to take travellers cheques then definitely take USD as you will struggle to cash GBP ones in a lot of places.
Although I would suggest that taking a debit card and/or credit card with you (if you can) will be much better. Other than a small fee (1-2 pounds), this is a more favourable option as you usually get a little better exchange rate than the tourist rate and you don't pay any commission either. (If you do decide to take a card instead, it is a good idea to warn your bank so they don't cancel your card thinking there is fraudulent activity!).

I always take a mixture of cash and travellers cheques. Take about 50 to 100 quid in Euros and the rest in travellers cheques. Its better to be safe than sorry.

I haven't used travellers cheques for 20 years. Cash (dollars) and credit cards are much less trouble and less expensive.

Us dollars, the Americans just won't know what to do with sterling, and it will drive you crazy, having to go to a bank to exchange them for US dollars all the time.
