I want to send letters to a friend and some other penpals but i'm in australia does that cause a problem

Not really...you just have to know the address. But it will take longer to get to them. But the jails will open your letters and make sure there is no contraband in it before they send them to the inmates.

Yes, go to google and search "prison penpals" and it will list several sites that will help you. There are even sites with pictures and notes from prisoners. Do be careful with sharing personal information, some people might try to take advantage of you. Good Luck.

Send letters to soldiers in Iraq, that would be a better idea.
