First of all, it is 'gnomes' and NOT 'knomes', although I guess pronounciationwise they would be the same.
And who told you that elves are now called that? They aren't. And even suppose that they were, what difference would it make to us? I mean, the creatures don't even exist in reality. Get a life, man.
And by the way, it would not make dumb people sound smart. It would just make them sound dumber.

First of all they are spelled "gnomes" and I would say that you might be right about how a gnome might a way to make dumb people sound smart because all gnomes are elves but not all elves are gnomes. This is due to the fact that all gnomes are dwarfs, but not all elvis are dwarfs and infact are often depicted to be the size of humans.
