Early Candidates for the Chargers Head Coaching Gig, Pt. 2
Posted Feb 13th 2007 2:00AM by mjd
Filed under: Chargers, AFC West, NFL Coaching

1. Jimmy Johnson. John Clayton mentions here that the Spanos family has a great relationship with Jimmy Johnson. Johnson's been out of coaching for a long time, and his last gig with the Dolphins didn't go so well. He's obviously got the pedigree and the championship experience, but it seems like a risky hire to me. Every time he sits down next to Terry Bradshaw, his IQ drops 17 points. Jimmy would also enjoy the San Diego lifestyle.

2. Dennis Green. Sean Salisbury mentions here that Dennis Green is a possibility. Quote the Salisbury, "The Chargers have a perfect candidate right in San Diego and that's Dennis Green. He's an excellent candidate for a veteran team like the Chargers and probably won't demand the type of power that other more established coaches will try to get from San Diego." Ugh. My face hurts. But it does beat Mark Schlereth's suggestion to "... call the Cowboys and find out who their second best candidate was ..."

3. Mike Singletary. Singletary's another name that's been mentioned in connection with a lot of jobs, and sooner or later, he's going to get one. Singletary's currently the linebackers coach and assistant head coach in San Francisco, and if the Chargers are looking for a young up-and-comer, he could be the guy.

4. Pete Carroll, Redux. We revisit Pete Carroll because Pro Football Talk seems to believe that the Chargers and Carroll already have a deal in the bag. They've put together a list of reasons as to why this is a possibility, which you can read about here (you may have to scroll down a bit).

5. Norm Chow, Redux. And we revisit Norm Chow, because I forgot to mention one thing (and thanks to commenter Sean for bringing it up): Norm Chow coached Philip Rivers at NC State and thought the world of him. He once said, "I told people before the draft, whoever got Philip Rivers was going to the Super Bowl in three years."

In your order:

1. JIMMY JOHNSON: Will never leave the broadcasting booth. With the amount of coaching positions that have come and gone in the last 5 years, if he didnt take one of those (like the Giants, the Lions, the Packers, etc.), he'll NEVER take another one.

2. DENNIS GREEN: Watch the video of him freaking out on the podium again. Howard Dean didnt get elected President for doing something like that, remember? After the season with the Cardinals, HE'LL never get re-hired either.

3. MIKE SINGLETARY: Im not sure if he has the stuff. Great player, but can he run a team?

4. PETE CARROLL: Too deep in college ball to leave now.

5. NORMAN CHOW: This is a possibility. If Philip RIvers really pitches for him, this might happen.

I can see someone like Steve Mariucci giving coaching another whirl. Parcells aint coming back. Maybe even Norv Turner.

The first five possiblities listed are interesting but I don't think any one of those will be the new head coach:

1. Jimmy Johnson. Good coach but not enough imagination to use the weapons in SD.

2. Dennis Green. I think Dennis Green is a good person, but not a good coach. He will not get another chance in the NFL

3. Mike Singletary. Of the five, maybe a possibility.

4. Pete Carroll. Pete Carroll is not going to leave USC. Plus he will not have control with AJ Smith the GM.

5. Norm Chow Will the Titans give him permission to interview?

I like the recent interviews of the Chargers as possibilities:

1. Rex Ryan - Def Coord from Baltimore. I good "football" guy. He will maiximize that defensive talent and knows the 3 -4

2. Mike Zimmer - A good canidate for the same reasons as Rex above. Also familar with the 3- 4

3. Ron Rivera - He will get his chance, but not this year.

4. Norv Turner - Alot of experience, but may suffer the same fate as Marty. They need a younger guy to get along with AJ Smith.

5. Gary Gibbs is another recent interview.

Of the five recent interviews, I go with Mike Zimmer then Rex Ryan. I liked Mike's quote about AJ Smith, whoever pleases AJ Smith gets the job and maybe a SuperBowl ring with all the talent in SD that Smith brings.

There's no way that Johnson coaches again, anywhere, so he is an immediate scratch.
Green will coach somewhere, but not until 2008 at the very least unless the offer he recieves is just too good to turn down (which is quite unlikely).
Carroll was mentioned for the brief Dolphins vacancy but made it clear that he is happy with USC.
Chow and Singletary are interesting choices but I think that San Diego needs to hire a man with NFL head coaching experience and neither has any.
I think that Jim Fassell, the old Giants coach, may be a good fit as would Jim Mora, who was recently hired as an assistant and had the Falcons the last few years would be solid choices but who knows.

It's very strange to see a 14- 2 team axe the head coach.

They will not hire Johnson - too questionable.
They will not hire Green - too volatile, not defensive enough.
Singletary - Maybe, but I don't know about him, it's possible.
Carroll - My pick. He would go to a really good team where he could make the personnel decisions, he wouldn't have to move, and he'd be able to add a super bowl ring to his NCAA ring - he's an excellent big game coach.
Chow - My second pick - he coached Rivers at NC State and would do pretty well with them. If Carroll won't leave USC, I would (unfortunately) expect Chow to get the job... I say unfortunately since I'm a huge Vince Young fan... and I think Singletary would be better.

My top 3 likelihood picks would be Carroll, Chow, Singletary
In order of how well they will do: Carroll, Singletary, Chow.

Of the names on your list, only Mike Singletary and Pete Carroll have been seriously discussed. The Chargers interviewed Singletary yesterday, but I don't know if Carroll is an interview candidate. Sean Salisbury is pulling for Dennis Green because he things he might be able to return to SD as the quarterbacks coach.

Guess Chow was wrong though. Third year and they didn't go to the Superbowl. Well either that or we are going by three years of him as starter. Anyway if I had to pick I would really look at Johnson and see if I could get him. Carroll is the worst. First he has no intrest in giving up what he has at USC(if he does then be suspicious, be VERY SUSPICIOUS, of this recruiting scandal) and second we know he wasn't successful in the NFL(which further makes you question the recruiting scandal.) I think Johnson has proven what he can do if you let him. The question is will the GM work with him.

Well since the Chargers let to many good replacements leave already.. I would say there is a couple of choices.
.
1. Jimmy Johnson- Personal friends of Spanos so you know there will be talk on him regardless.

2. Pete Correll-Outside chance here since he has a good college profile and would probally cost alot to get him to leave it.

3. Mike Singletary- Wow...an ex-Super Bowl champ, he has made alot of progress in his coaching career, but is he really ready to Big League with a Big Expectations for next year ?

4. Any coach that knows how to run the West Coast Offense and be productive on Defense too. One or other is good, but Both would be AWESOME !!!!

Personally I would say either of these high profile coach's...ZOOK or Spurrier.

Jimmy Johnson - no way. He has said so himself several times
Dennis Green - again, no way
Mike Singletary - maybe
Pete Carroll - only IF USC gets penalized for the recruitment violations. Has heard Carroll say many times that he doesn't want to coach in the pros again.
Norm Chow - seriously doubt.
Ron Rivera - strong possibility
Norv Turner - the most likely candidate, buddies with the SD owner

Let me get this out first. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Ok. I think It will be Jimmy Johnson. Pete Carroll doesn't seem like he will leave USC still and Norm Chow is probably going to stay too. I think Jimmy Johnson would be a good pick for the Bolts because he'll probably have a better relationship with Spanos and AJ Smith. We already know he can win in the playoffs (unlike Marty) so I think he could help the Chargers.

Good luck to Marty wherever he goes.

I hope Norm Chow. Look what he did with Steve Young, Carson Palmer, Vince Young, and Matt Leinart...and what he did with the Trojans. I bet that he would love to be back to the West Coast. I'm not exactly a Chargers' fan but I do go to their home games (didn't miss any this past season), but if they can get Norm Chow as head coach...I'll be a 100% Chargers fan...hehe :)

Pete Carroll used to coach in the NFL, he sucked and he went back to college...so, he's better off staying with kids.

Norm Chow has intelligence, discipline, strategic mind, and class.
