I would suggest get a good carpet cleaner in (and no dont rent one its just not as good) . It may not be very cheap but a good one should do a decent job for you if its just dirt. If its worn out (but not through abuse) the landlord should replace. Surely? I would have thought after 5 years if you have looked after the flat properly and paid rent etc on time the landlord should replace the carpet if its past cleaning. You should speak to the estate agent.

borrow a carpet cleaner of someone/new carpets are quite cheap these days,is the carpet frayed or dangerous in any way if so ask landlord to change for safety reasons,or play to his good nature and explain if you been living there a long time with no rent problems he she could at least consider replacing carpet as you have been good tenants/or check local papers sometimes people give fairly good carpets away,i have even seen a couple in big charity shops

Dont buy a carpet as only your landlord will benefit instead clean it thouroughly and then buy a very large rug almost the size of the room and it will make such a difference. The best bit is that you can take it with you when you move and so still benefit from it.

Hire a carpet cleaner of buty a cheap one. You can probably get the job doen for a couple of £100

If the carpet is at all servicable then the landlord is not required to change it.

Buy really cheap carpets in the places you feel really need replacing ,did you pay a deposit when you moved in ask if you could get some of it back for the carpet and the land lord can keep the carpet when you eventually leave.

you can hire a carpet cleaner for the day , they don´t cost much to hire, That´s the problem with rented place´s , you could tell him it´s full of mites´and a health hazard , and if you suffer with Allergies, it´s his job to pay for these thing´s . if you rent again make sure you consult with the landlord before moving in

As long as it is not badly worn, rent a rug shampooer and make it nice again. If it is badly worn and there is nothing in the lease about the carpet, then you could buy an inexpensive carpet.

Hire a professional carpet cleaning service.
If that doesn't make them look better, purchase large carpet throws and place them where you want to hide the carpet.
Good Luck.
