It's a great place to go to, plus some of the surrounding desert towns if you're into curiousity.

Best to do your overall research on the Moroccan Government Tourism Portal.

Then book your accommodation with someone reliable, such as cheaperthanhotels who have localised help desks and quick / instant booking available. The other thing is the images on the site can give you a bit of an idea.

Marrakesh is great, if a bit hectic like most Moroccan towns! After you've done the medina and the Djema al Fnaa, and bought a carpet, head up the Atlas mountains and climb Mount Toubkal. It's feasible without specialized equipment or a guide, at least to get to the refuge below the summit, and you get fantastic alpine scenery on the way and a real sense of peace in some of the out of the way villages along the road to the trekking bases. You'll need to hire a car though, to get over the mountains (which are just behind Marrakesh). Get a guidebook and check out this option if you like walking...
