I am in Chatham, Ontario, my boss told me that unless the call centre closes down I have to come to work. What if it is unsafe to come to work? Isn't that like being in an unsafe workplace? Say we are in a blizzard or advised by the Gov't to stay off the roads? Just wondering where we are coved in the Labour Laws for such a thing, can can a boss write you up because you felt coming to work would put you at a greater then normal risk....thanks!!!

I'm looking for a legal answer...since not all of us are in the same situation.

We can't find anything about it at work right now lol...so we are in debate. We are talking blowing snow with little visability, unclear roads, or an advisement to stay off the roads by the Gov't...thanks!!! We don't know what the coverage for workers are?

Your employer can't make you go to work, but they can fire you if you don't go. If road conditions are bad, then leave earlier or find alternate transportation. Blaming it of bad weather is like blaming it on undependable transportation. The employer requires you to be there at a certain time, how you get there is your responsibility.

Your boss can not make you come to work, but your boss can give you an attendance occurrence is the center is open. If the Gov't closed the roads (not just warned about staying off the roads), then your boss should not give you an occurrence.

you can make up an excuse. like you got into a minor accident and need to wait for the police. or your car wont start. or you have explosive diarreha. be creative! your boss cannot make you come to work and he cannot fire you if you call out regaurdless of the reason. but if you do it too much, he can. but then again i dont know the laws in canada. alls i know is you can drink and gamble at 18!!!! all in all, if the roads are in bad condition and it is said on the news to stay off of the road, you should do as they say, stay home. unles boss is a jackass, he cannot fire you for that.

If the rest of the staff can get to work in such circumstances, then you can too.
