It seems strange in the sense that sleep overcomes tension and makes you feel relaxed.
The probable reason could be the metabolism of the body and its long range effect. Let me explain this. If you sleep for longer periods then it is possible that this is due to reduced metabolism probably due to less thyroxine secretion. Then there may be a disposition towards accumulation of fats in the body. This might narrow the arteries of the heart region leading to heart attacks.

I think Pacol gave an interesting explanation, I would like to add something:

There is a correlation between depression and long sleeping: depressed people tend to sleep longer (since when they are asleep they don't have to face the world) and sleeping long does also make one feel more depressed (the feeling of drowsiness Pacol was talking about). Depressed people are likely to live shorter, since they won't care much about their health (and will hence not exercise, will be more likely to use drugs/alcohol/nicotine etc.. etc..).

What would be interesting to know is whether only very long sleepers (for instance more than 10 hours a day) are likely to live shorter than normal sleepers, or that normal sleepers (8 hours) also live shorter than extremely short sleepers (less than 6 hours), if that would be the case above explanation wouldn't suffice.

A possible reference to this "study" might shed more light.

It might be true because of the fact that the longer your sleep, the more time the body spends not performing any physical activity. With obesity a major factor in the US and parts of Europe (and possibly even other locales), the lack of physical activity won't help one live too long.

Plus, personal experience tells me (and it may be something you have experienced as well) that over-sleeping makes you feel drowsy and fatigued all throughout the day. That could lead to other causes of "dying younger" (e.g. falling asleep while driving, inattentiveness while working - in particular at a hazardous job).

There may also be something related to one's sleep cycle and how it can be completely thrown off by fluctuations in the amount of sleep one gets. That relates back to how much sleep one may or may not get and that in turn, relates back to the lack of physical activity (via over-sleeping) and/or inattentiveness to one's environment (via lack of sleep).

Again, more information would be needed for a conclusive verdict. Until then, the jury's out on this.

There could be many reasons on WHY the people are sleeping too much, I mean, when you say longer, do you mean 2 extra hours of sleep at night, or a 5 hour nap in the afternoon?

This is not a documented research.

I really don't see any logic in that. Your body needs sleep. i think there would need to be further studies.
