are we the end of line in evolution? does nature has another ace up its sleeve, a better one? have we interfered with nature to such an extent to have confused it? looks like it has to clean the slate to write something else.

Evolution doesn't really work like that. There's no "next level"; it's not about superiority.

Very interesting question.
Because I'm a christian I don't really believe that nature is in charge of evolution and God is.
But if I use my imagination than a variety of things come to mind... Like the earth will be an ocean and fish are in charge.
Or Aliens or Pinkie and the Brain really took over the world.

i think people will begin to modify the species. if society doesn't suffer any major collapses, we will do this via genetic engineering. if we do suffer a major collapse, simple selective breeding will be substituted.
