Let's say in football, do the certain players get certain numbers or is it random? For instance is the quarterback usually #1? And I mean every quarterback? Or is it all just random?

In the NFL, the first digit is mandated by position.... 1-19 for quarterbacks, kickers, and now recievers, 20s for RBs, and so on. The only way this really affects the game per se is that the officiating crew needs to be able to distinguish linemen (ineligible recievers) from other players.

In other sports, the rules for numbers are more lax and governed by tradition... for example, in the NHL, most goaltenders used to wear either #1 or something in the 30s, although that's not so true nowadays.

In the NBA, so that referees can signal a player by fingers on each hand, player can only wear digits 0-5, although there's some process by which a player can wear a different number. There's a tradition there, too, because it seems that the players who wear those numbers are head cases.. Ron Artest and Dennis Rodman being two of the biggest.

In baseball, since numbers are handed out in spring training, when the rosters are larger, players given high numbers are usually the ones that the team doesn't think will make the club that year... a lot of players with high numbers wear their large number as a symbol of defiance and pride, effectively saying, "#64? They thought I wouldn't make it, but I showed them."

No it is not random, there are rules on what numbers can be warn by what positions, all QBs must be under 20, RBs are from 20 to 39, and WRs are the 80s and teens. Reggie Bush when he came to the NFL asked if he could wear his college # and was denied.
