I've been accepted to University of Minnasota and have been considering taking my horse with me if I end up going to that college. I was wondering if anyone knew of some stables that are close to that college that provide stall boarding, I dont want my horse left out in a pasture especially because she was negelected before I got her and she can be really touchy about where she lives.(such a city girly I tell ya)

I would recomend asking one of the faculty members from the college of agriculture, animal science department that specialize in equine. They will know alot about the area, since they live there. As well as have a specialized interest in the local horse industry. They also will have more time to help you than a vet would. I looked on the website and it lists two professors for equine studies, Dr. Marcia R. Hathaway and Dr. Christie Ward. I would e-mail them and explain that you are an incoming freshman and would like some advice/direction about a boarding facility in the area. Mention what you are looking for (pasture, stall, training?) and what disciplines (english, western, etc.). I'm sure they would be happy to direct you to a good home for your equine friend. I've included the link to the faculty listings by species that gives you their e-mail addresses. Best of luck!

I agree, ask some local vets which stables they would recommend. You could also search the Internet, that's how I found my boarding stable. Check the classifieds in the newspaper and the phone book. One thing though....I know you said you don't want your horse kept outside, but try to find a place where she gets turn out time. Horses kept in stalls all day/night can develop depression and anxiety because they don't have a herd to be a part of, this may be why she is so touchy......just a thought.

I don't know where you're moving from, but Sarasota, FL is a pretty pricey area, and the cost of hay down there is very high - - was $25- $30/bale, timothy, about 100 lbs last winter I think. Coastal was quite a bit less. I don't think there is much land for pasture in that part of the state, either. Not trying to discourage you, but board might be the least of your concerns. You might want to check out the other expenses as well. You might find someone with a private barn who will make a deal with you.

if i were you, i would look up some veterinarians in that area, and ask them which stables they reccommend most.
