Network layers are just mappings of where data gets passed off to other applications and machines.

Be careful however as there are different types of models.

Microsoft uses the common 7 layer OSI go to www.microsoft.com for both the server and client models.

Cisco uses the same basic 7 layers but talks more about the WAN applications. www.cisco.com has good info.

IBM still covers the older SNA network layers

and for some testing the old model of layers that is not really in use, that the governments designed their layouts on.

This is used ONLY in theory work, howwever it does help in troublshooting network problems if you understand it. Of course you need to know it for testing purposes.

LAN is local area network, an example of a LAN is like a home network, or a network at a school. WAN is wide area network, which is basiclly a huge network that covers broad area, and example would be the internet.
if you are not familiar with computers it might be hard to understand about these stuff but here is the answer anyway. a server is a main computer on a network there is many different types of server, most big company's run a couple of servers together ( example: one for data, one for controlling traffic, one for giving ip addresses and others).
now about the layers. the layers system is a way to explain how data is transformed through the cables. there is 7 layers (physical, data, network, transport, session, presentation, and application layer)
im not going to write you what each layer does because that would take a couple of pages but here is a site that have information about the layers.

Don't know if this will help, but:

OSI layers are:
Physical
Data link
Network
Transport
Session
Presentation
Application

The way I remember this is by the mnemonic phrase: "Please do not touch Santa's presents, anyone."

Have fun!
