I have an ATi Radeon x700 SE in my 1.5 year old computer at present and am buying a newer machine in a few weeks, which has a nVidea Geforce 6100 (Nforce 405). Is this a better card (with it being a newer machine) or not? I want to play games such as FEAR and Half Life 2 for example. Thanks

both cards are onboard solutions but are quite capable of running most games but at very low resolutions
to get the most out of your games you need a dedicated graphics card that will go into your pci-express x 16 slot
you dont need to break the bank these days to get a good graphics card, for less than £50 i would recommend a nvidia geforce 7300gt(http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=498838) this will play both fear and half life2 at reasonable resolutions, also you will get some excellent frame rates
for the £100 pound bracket i would recommend the geforce 7600gt(http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=458375)this will play your games agin but much faster and smoother than the previous card
however if you want the best card there is let me introduce the nvidia geforce 8800gtx(http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=499238),this is the best single graphic card on the planet, and will play nay game avalible and still have bags of resources left, but the price is very steep, but this will be the best card for many years to come
finally, for the bargain choice,to play your games at reasonable frame rates but hardly having to spend much the nvidia geforce 6200 (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=443862) is a bargain at £22,what more do you need
i hope this helps
good luck

The nVidia GeForce 6100 is not technically a stand-alone card and i wouldn't even bother looking at it for games like those. It requires an nVidia GPU motherboard to work. Much better is the 7000 series and for the money it's much better value series of cards.

Aim for a minimum of 7600 GS but better is 7900 GS. If you can splash out then the GT's are better quality but not really as good value.

I don't know so much about ATi sorry.

try this out:- (UK)

It's a 7600GS silent card with 256Mb RAM for under £70 ($135)

i wouldn't have either to be honest they are older cards than the computer you already have. when you get your new system ask them how much it would be for an upgrade on the graphics and go for atleast a radeon x1650 pro 256mb or nvidia 6600gt i wouldn't touch anything lower than them if you like games but as i said atleast one of them. higher the number the better and 512mb even better for memory.

you are able to overclock utilising the Nvidia administration Panel through getting Coolbits. search for for it on the internet. you are able to also use Rivatuner. you should use ATItool to study if the overclock is solid, yet i do not propose it for the fairly overclocking. Overclock in yet another software and use "examine for Artifacts" in ATItool.
