Each account can hold up to 10 characters on the same server. (1 game = 1 account). So, yes, you both could each play a character on the same computer and the same account, one at a time. If one tries to log into the same account on another computer, it will kick the other person using the account offline.
It's an enjoyable game, and well worth the monthly fee. (15 dollars a month is nothing, when you think about how much a dinner out and a movie ticket are, which is about 3 hours entertainment, when that 15 dollars pays for 30 days of unlimited gameplay hours.) It's also so addicting that you may consider your own account and computer after awhile. Both my husband and I play.
For your first character, I would recommend a Dwarf or Dranei Hunter. The hunter is a fast leveling class with a lot of utility, and doesn't really take much advanced skill or knowledge to play. They are primarily a solo class, so it makes it easier to learn the game without heavily relying on others. Also, looking ahead, the Alliance side seems to have an advantage when it comes to raiding and PvP with the ability to receive fear ward.
All classes have something special only they can do. Basically, it depends on what you like to do, and what appeals to you.
Here's a small description of each class

Have fun!

Yes u can have more than 1 character on the same account. U can have up to 10 on one server and u can create characters on as many servers as u want. Anyway if u will choose to have 2 characters on opposing factions- 1 alliance, 1 horde, u will have to use 2 servers because u are not allowed to have 2 different factions on the same server. I would say is a game worth getting. I am almost 28 years old and I got this game and played it for almost a year on a day to day basis. Now I don't play it anymore because I am 37 weeks pregnant lol :) but I can say is the biggest game I ever played. I found easy to start with a dwarf hunter (wich is now lvl 60) but I always regretting that my main character was not a rogue human-alliance or undead-horde. This is because with a rogue u can use stealth,be invisible when u want to which u will find an important thing later in the game when u the opposing faction will be after killing your character for honour points. Hope u will get this game. Have fun :).

You can have multiple characters on the same account. Between me, my wife, and my daughter we have over 20 characters on the same account. When you get ready to choose, go with a Horde character. I have played both sides and it seems that people that play Horde characters are more friendly and helpful. A Tauren or Orc Hunter would probably be best to start with.
The ideal setup, if you can afford it, is 2 computers and 2 accounts. That way you and your son can play at the same time and help each other out. Of course you would have to buy 2 copies of the game as well. The activation key that comes with the game will only work for 1 account.

It's a fun game to be sure. My PC won't run such a fine game but my friends play it all the time.
I think you would need 2 accounts to play with 2 different characters, but I am not certain of this. Here is the website for World of Warcraft http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/index.xml perhaps it will give you the answer.
I would reccomend playing any race or character they all are cool and fun for beginners and experts. Because at lower levels you have fewer abilities and your character can easily return to life if they are killed they are all easy and fun to use. I like the Orcs in it because they look cool.

You can share an account. My husband and I did that for a long time. I probably have 15 charecters on my account that I play off and on. The only thing is you both can't play at the same time with one account on 2 computers, but if you are sharing it should be just fine.

Yes you can play as two different characters from the same computer. I recently purchased WOW and me and my girl have set up seperate characters. However be warned WOW is very addictive and playing from one account could cause arguments. I have played one maybe two hours so so far compared to my girlfriend's 7 hours in one day(and she plays it every day). I wish id never set it up on my computer as i never get to use it any more :(

Yes you can have 16 characters per server.
(FYI, you may end up getting a second account. A friend of mine let his girlfriend play on his account and she ended up taking over the PC. He had to buy her her own account lol)
Best character? I'd say maybe a mage, rogue or hunter.

This hasnt happened to me, but I can say that two of my old guildies in wow got married. Yep, married. and where happily married for 3 years at that point, so I can tell you that it can happen, and seems to work out sometimes. I guess the next step would be video chat. (cummon, you must have fios or a cable modem. gotta keep a nice latency time after all, right?) Then I guess the next thing would be gifts in the mail, and then meeting in person. well, good luck.

probably the horde- class- BLOOD ELF MAGE-keep working at the mage and pick an attribute to follow-i picked fire-(ice, lightning etc.) you will start to level up and get different mage attacks-when you get to your 1st pyroblast and arcane power-you will be very good(for your level)- pyroblast is an attack where it hurls a huge fireball at the opponent dealing huge ammounts of damage depending on ur level-then to get the attack more powerful use arcane power witch gives an extra boost of power to any magic attack- so id pick the horde- blood elf mage-and when your a mage and a blood elf it gives ur magic attacks an extra +10
