Can someone please tell me the best route from Sydney to Alice Springs and back ?

I am planning a trip with a few mates from Sydney to Alice.... i dont have a 4 wheel drive. Mostly i might take Carolla Toyota. Can someone please tell me the best route. I have two spare weeks at hand.

Some people like to complicate things!

Two weeks will be a long trip with a short stay in Alice. There is a bitumen road from Adelaide to Alice Springs and it is bitumen from Sydney to Adelaide. To avoid covering the same route in each direction, I would drive from Sydney to Adelaide via the Hume Highway to Gundagai, through Wagga Wagga to Hay, Mildura and follow the River Murray through Renmark, Nuriootpa to the Barossa Valley and on to Adelaide. I would then head north to Port Augusta and on through Coober Pedy to Alice Springs.

If you are stopping to look at things on the way, it could take you a week. If you drive straight through it is about 1500km to Adelaide from Sydney and about the same from Adelaide to the Alice.

Coming back, you don't have the time to go through the Territory and Queensland but I would drive south to Port Augusta then head for Peterborough and on to Broken Hill, Cobar, Nyngan, Dubbo , Bathurst and Sydney. There is lots to see on the way but if you have time, don't miss the Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo. Hire bicycles to see it.

Two weeks is really not enough time to do justice to the trip and to see the sights in Alice Springs and Uluru but it could be done. It is bitumen all the way so the Toyota Corolla will be fine. Make sure the air-conditioning is working.

Why are you going to Alice Springs? Isn't that an isolated place where there's nothing but a top secret communications facility?

If you're in a car. Stay on the road. Keep heading north, and then every now and again turn left, you'll get there eventually.

If you reach Tasmania, then you're definitely lost and shoud ask for directions.

Besides that, I would follow the signs, they usually point you in the right direction. just make sure you take lots of water and food... People die in Australia from lack of planning and MAPS.

Return journey, just follow your breadcrumbs.
