Good for you for trying! I know it's hard.
It is particullary hard to quit "cold turkey" (all at once), so here's what I suggest:

1. Decide on 3 mini goals.
Here are some examples of mini goals: no smoking between certain hours of the day, keep a journal of when you tend to smoke more and how you feel at those times, or replacing one cigarette each day with chewing gum.
Do those mini goals for 2 weeks.
Starting slowly will help you gain confidence and ease into your new lifestyle.

2. Every week, tell one more person about your plan to quit smoking. This will keep you accountable to an increasing number of people.

3. After the first 2 weeks, expand your mini goals.
For example, no smoking for longer periods of time each day, etc.

4. Expand your goals every week thereafter.

5. Reward yourself once a week. You deserve it, and it will keep you motivated.

6. Keep track of your progress.

7. Try to find an online support group for people quitting smoking.

These are basically not my ideas. I adapted the SparkPeople program for stopping over-eating to stopping smoking.
I know SparkPeople works for food, and I believe it will work for cigarrettes.

Best of luck!!!

If you want to keep from smoking, what you need to do is make a long list of reasons why you should not smoke. Write this list in a pocket notebook. Carry this list with you where ever you go. When you have thoughts about lighting up, read the list. The reasons that you write down need to be pretty compelling. They have to make you think really hard about weather you want to smoke or not.

Some reasons that I used are, smoking makes you're clothes stink, smoking makes you're teeth turn yellow, when you smoke you put you're self at risk for heart disease, and how many people do you know that are dead or are going to die at an early age because they smoke.
These sites will help you get informed and you can use them to build you're list.
Best of luck to you.

I have this problem before. Take a smoke free vacation. Go somewhere for a week and make sure you are determined not to smoke. That was what I did and I finally quited smoking after 20 years of trying. Go for a sport or nature vacation. Avoid smokers like if they are lepers.

The word is spelled avoid (a.v.o.i.d)

You have tried to avoid smoking. Do you mean to say that you personally smoke or not? If you want to avoid smoking, just do it. Many people make the decision to avoid smoking daily.

Do you mean that you have taken up the habit of smoking? If you smoke - there are many products that could help you stop if you really want to. Ask your pharmacist or doctor to help you find a product, nicotine gum, patch, pills or other aid like hypnosis to help you.

QuitSmokingSupport.com is all about providing exceptional quit smoking support.

or

Do you mean that you want to avoid second-hand smoke (other people smoking in public places)? Good question. Let your friends know that you do not want to breathe second-hand smoke and you don't want them to smoke when they are with you in your house or car. It's more difficult if you go places where smoking is allowed.

Info from the quitsmokingsupport.com site:

Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, including 43 known cancer-causing (carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins. These include nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide, as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, and DDT.

Nicotine is highly addictive. Smoke containing nicotine is inhaled into the lungs, and the nicotine reaches your brain in just six seconds.

Nicotine in small doses acts as a stimulant to the brain. In large doses, it's a depressant, inhibiting the flow of signals between nerve cells. In even larger doses, it's a lethal poison, affecting the heart, blood vessels, and hormones. Nicotine in the bloodstream acts to make the smoker feel calm.

Try Allen Carr´s "Little Book of Quitting". It is a tiny book, and it has helped me, and many other people, to quit smoking immediately! He also wrote a larger version "Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking". You can find both on www.amazon.com .

I would also advise you to stay away from places where people smoke in the beginning. Or if you always smoke when you drink alcohol or coffee, try to avoid those too for a while.

hi
my advice is to just control yourself for 24 hours without smoking and in between if u feel like smoking u can take a chewingum or can drink water in plenty.
u will not loose this habit quickly but if u try this then frequency of smoking will reduce slowly and if u are sincere enough then u will surely quit smoking.

You simply have to DECIDE you won't smoke anymore. That's all.
