if it turns off after a period of specified time then its the famous warm which infect win-XP SP1.
you 1st need to install good antivirus program like( kaspersky, NOD32)
and then u need to upadate Windows from SP1 to SP2.
but if its not the warm then it could be another virus or hardware failiure.

It sounds as if your computer is affected by virus. You should look for an antivirus and see if there are any. At times, it may lead you to format and re-install the O/S too.

delete & reconfigure internet connections.
try different internet connection to isolate the fault , so you can ensure that if it is connection specific or not.
